Actually, Roth did more than just get a sack against the Steelers. When Crowder dropped their RB for like a seven yard loss, Roth was one of the guys who had a huge push to help disrupt the play for Crowder to come in. He got into the QB's face a couple of other times as well. He may have turned a small corner at the last game, at least, I hope he did. Come to think of it, even Manny Wright and Kevin Vickerson had good games. Our Rookies really looked like they belonged last week.
I think, given Ronnie's lack of playing and practice time so far, that if you were to hand out an award for best rookie in training camp, it would have to go to Channing Crowder. The guy has not only stayed healthy, but performed like a stud on defense and may very well bump Seau from the starting lineup before this season is done. He had played that good.
Daniels would be a medium second. I think we are all agreed that his play has helped ease some of our fears about the other CB spot. He had the advantage of knowing the system when he came in, but still. He has adjusted to the speed of the pro game nicely and has made some nice plays and shown he can actually tackle ( Madison take notes ). If he is healthy, he could be the first rookie to start a game for us this year.
Roth will definately get some playing time but he won't start. The fortunate thing for us is that we don't need him to start right away. The front seven and the starting d-line, more specifically, has looked stellar. That allows Matt to sit for awhile and learn behind some fantastic ball players and come in on mop up duty and certain alignments. Plus, when he is ready to come in, he should be prepared and RARING to rip some poor QB's head off ( hopefully Losman's, Brady's or Pennington's...or better yet Fiedler's!)
Overall, I have been very impressed with Saban's defensive rookies. Hopefully his main offensive one will be just as impressive, if not moreso. And no, all you wise a$$es I am not talking about Alabi...
