I was thinking about other options at the LB spot. I think we are thin at that position, not in depth but in talent. I just thought about peter boulware, is he still there??? I know he's old(entering his 12th season) but he is effective and I think he still can get the job done. I'm not impressed with sparagan, hodge or newman so boulware would an upgrade over them. pkus he's a proven winner, has xperience at the 3-4 allignement and has a ring(no, not an engagement ring)
also jamie sharper could be an option and is familiar with capers system. if he's still there also I think he's worht a look. thoughts?

I believe both are available, but both have had injury problems bc/and are obviously getting up their in age.

While they are both available, there are definite reasons for them still being available. Newman may surprise us here....he is very consistent and brings the best option of the the other two guys in overall OLB strength. Hodge is a little better in pass coverage (he's faster for one thing), Spraghan can't is better in run support, but as a combination pass coverage, pass rushing and run stuffing OLB, Newman isn't that bad. He still has to beat out Spraghan in camp who has the edge due to having played in the system for a year....Capers LBs don't do much differently than Saban's do (Saban may have put his LB schemes together based off of Capers system), so the adjustment shouldn't be too much, but it is a complicated blitzing and coverage scheme that will take some live action in camp to learn for Hodge and Newman...He's not as flashy as Arrington or some of the other elite OLBs, but he very solid...

I'm not convinced that Saban won't take a shot at one of the OLBs in the supplementary draft, but it'll be for future use, not as our starting guy this year. Whichever of the three he goes after (assuming he does) will be a project. Brooks is the obvious closer one to being able to contribute and looks to be the most instinctive, but Berryman offers some flexiblility as a "JT" type player and Dixon is more of a longshot...it could be the guy of the future for us if we get one of them...Until then, Newman, Spraghan and Hodge will do just fine under Capers teachings....

if he came in then, and assuming he enetered at 22 years old, he would be around 30 or 31 right now.

I have no idea if this is all acurate though.

i dunno what spragan did wrong last year , he was solid and i read that capers is impressed with him after watching tape from last year

I do not see LB as a weakness on this team. Again we had 49 sacks last year, second behind the Seahawks with 50.

With a year of playing together under their belt the front 7 should be even better.

The Secondary is where we must come together and get better.

Most of the sacks came from the DL and the secondary....

You maybe not be impressed with Spagan but after Dom Capers reviewed film from last season, he was very impressed with Spragan. I will take Dom Capers word over yours. Sorry.

i watched every game last year a couple of times and i dont remember thinking that spragan was inadequate at all. Reggie Howard stood out and the safety play, but not spragan. He made several fine plays and seemed to be in posistion most of the time. Tell me what you saw to say that he needs to be replaced.

Reggie Howard !!!! He stood out as a piece of toast.

My bad,I reread your post....It looked,at first like you were saying
R.H. stood out in a good way.

I saw an adequate starter but not a great player in spragan. a guy who was supposed to win the starting job last year over seau and just couldn't impress the staff of that time and lost the starting job. he can get the job done but if we want to go to the playoffs we need at least some players with playoffs experience(look at the secondary and youg players like crowder, manny wright, roth, hodge...) and playmakers and all I remember about boulware is he made plays all the time and he was a great blitzer which could help since we really don't have natural OlLB's(taylor is not an OLB) who can blitz. nothing against spragan but I know we can do better.
adequate

I don't think Saban will ever stand pat at any position if he feels he can get value through trade, free agent signings, etc. If Saban thinks Spragen is good thats good enough for me, however, if Saban feels like he can get a better player I am sure he and Mueller will continue scanning the wires to see whats available.

Hodge and Newman will be ready and I have watched them since they played at UNC and have confidence in them if Sprgen can't get it done. Both are underrated IMO and may both end up starting at some point.
