After initially thinking for over a week that it would be stupid to release Beck (assuming he has no trade value), I am finally OK with it if he is released. Part of what really frustrates all of us Dolphin fans is that another 2nd round pick has been wasted. A.J. Feeley, Daunte Culpepper and now John Beck - all wasted 2nd round picks on QBs! Three 2nd round picks on most good NFL teams equate to two starters and a Pro Bowl player, yet we have nothing. These wasted picks (and many others) have really hurt the talent level of the Dolphins and I am so pissed at the various bone heads who had been running this organization since Jimmy Johnson retired.
I and many other Dolphin fans like Beck better than McKown and we think Beck has more upside, but we don't call the shots. Parcells and company know their football, and if they don't think he has a future in the league, than so be it. They will just keep turning over the roster until they are satisfied with the skill level at each position. We just have to trust their judgement, like it or not. Besides, we acquired Pennington for no draft picks and Henne looks good, so we are now decent at QB.
As far as Beck being a Parcells guy, I think he has the traits Parcells admires such as working hard and being completely devoted to football - so that is not the issue. There is no conspiracy against Beck from Parcells and the coaches. Also, I don't think Parcells is so vain that he can only have people he hand picked on the team. Parcells wants to win, and if a good player he didn't hand pick can help, he will welcome that player and not hesitate to use him. Although I constantly read about how accurate and strong armed Beck is in various blogs, he quite frankly hasn't looked good in actual games. The only TD of his career (against the Cincinnati) was on a busted coverage. That's it. But his fumbles and under thrown passes were many. I hope Beck does make the team (when he was picked last year I hoped he might be our next Bob Griese - as there will never be another Dan Marino), but if he doesn't it will mean that Parcells doesn't think he play - not that he isn't one of his guys. Parcells wants the best hard working players he can get to turn things around to get us to the Super Bowl, and all of us want this too.
