For the last couple of years I have noticed that the league is hating on the cb position. Last night as I watched a great LSU vs. Auburn game their was a play where the wr fully extended his arm for seperation and the announcer says it was a good no call. This is a growing trend against one of the hardest positions to play. I played corner in semi-pro and You are at a disadvantage from the start. The wr's gets bigger stronger faster every year. You start out backpeddleing against people that run sub 4-5 40's. Thats not bad enough you can't so much as look at the wr wrong without a flag while it's good no calls when a wr extends his arm and they let it go to make the league more exciting. This is total bs and it wont matter who plays cb for us the way things are going.

you're right, the rules surrounding cornerback play get tighter and tighter all the time. I think this is one of the problems of playing straight up man coverage (wanny style), cornerbacks will tend to get beat more often in today's system more often than not. There's a growing consensus that teams ought to confuse and pressure the quarterback more rather than defend the receiver outright. So you see a lot more zones and blitzes to try and negate the advantage the receiver has from the beginning (saban style). This seems to me like the only way to play pass defense in today's receiver friendly world.

Thanks, I was hoping I wasn't just being biest glad someone else noticed this.

yeh you made a good point. a physical cornerback who tries to jam a receiver only has five yards to do it in now. But that means you gotta be within five yards when the ball is snapped, which is trouble against a small but shifty speed receiver who can juke their way out of it. You better damn well have safety support. So now you have two guys covering one receiver if you want to play physical, which is too much in a 3 or 4 receiver set.
so what happens? big physical cornerbacks are a dying breed in the NFL, because the rules are designed to let receivers run exactly the route as it was drawn up on the chalkboard. It's a shame for football, because cornerbacks have to play delicately and receivers don't really learn how to adjust well when running a route

I look for colleges and pros to start converting some wr's to cb's. It is very rare to see a 6-2+ 200+ cb but the way things are going that will be a trend before to long. Bad news for the little man. And these wr's and announcers disrespect the cb's saying if they could catch they would play wr. If the wr wanted a challenge they would play db but they would rather shoot of the mouth and act like their better than their little counterparts. Thats why I like Sam I usually don't like show boating but I say if your a cb and make a play rub it in their face.
