I'm taking a wait and see attitude. IMHO, our DL isn't really ideal, we have an aged NT in Ferguson, a good but old player in Holiday that isn't a perfect fit for the 34, and Starks who holds potential, but isn't the finished article. And nobody has worked with anyone standing next to them. Add in two rookies that need to adjust to the NFL and add weight, and trying to force a square peg like Roth into a round 34 hole. It's going to be a rough ride. Although, I can see Rod Wright excelling at this defense, and if the light ever comes on for Soliai (last chance saloon?) he'd be a nice fit as well.
At Linebacker, we have Joey Porter and misfits. If Taylor comes back, great, but I think everyone is expecting him to be gone at some point this season. Without Zach, Channing will have to get by on merit--and I think he's just plain not good enough. I like Torbor, but he's not exactly a star. Ayodele is a subpar performer who we hope can improve as an ILB. Filling the other OLB (Taylor's replacement) will either be one of the athletic phenoms who hasn't really done anything, either Charlie Anderson or Quentin Moses. Color me underwhelmed.
I think our secondary was mistakenly not addressed in this draft. There were a tonne of good CB prospects, yet we selected zero. Will Allen is solid but undersized, everybody else has real holes in their game, health, or just plain sucks. At Safety we have Jason Allen and hope he continues to develop. Yeremiah Bell, like every year, will tantalize with ability then get injured. Hopefully one of our retread veteran safeties can fill the void. I don't even know that we can field a decent nickel package to be honest.
I'm not going to crucify Pasqualoni if we suck, because honestly, our secondary is weak, our linebacking corp is subpar, and our line needs time to gel. All these people predicting silly stuff like a 9-7 record just aren't looking at the roster. People expecting us to be the Zach and Jason defense from the Saban year are just plain delusional. The best things our defense has going for it are Joey Porter and our running game ... seriously.
