J.J. on Culpepper: Former Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson, speaking on WQAM-560, expanded on his recent comment that quarterback Daunte Culpepper is "done."
"I don't see him ever playing at the level he played at a couple years ago, when he was up for maybe MVP of the league," Johnson said. "I just don't think with the injury that he had to try to overcome, I don't know that he'll ever be able to play at that level again. ...
"It's not his explosiveness, it's his decision-making. ... He is not ready to release the football, doesn't seem like he knows where to throw the football."

Riiiight. And we all know Willis McGahee sure wasn't playing well since he got that injury. :rolleyes2

Jimmy says he may not be able to return to the form he was in when he could contend for an MVP, but then he questions his playmaking and decision making which have little to do with injuries. What does Jimmy know?

Its not about the injury its about the Decision making. The guy can obviously throw the ball well and put it where he wants to. The problem is he dosent know where to go with the ball. His is not making the reads and getting the ball out.

I would questions Daunte's decision making...he was sitting back there all day long and he just couldnt figure out where to throw the ball...It's just not possible that nobody is open every single play.

It's not fair that with all Culpepper has had to overcome he's stuck with this o-line and this o-coordinator. Chambers has gotten lost in some games, Booker can't stay healthy and McMike is stuck blocking frequently. So his playmakers aren't helping him either. Johnson is entitled to his opinion but I think he's dead wrong. Daunte will be back, sometime soon after the bye week, and he will light it up for us. That's my opinion.

daunte's injury was worse

How was it worse? It is my understanding that both suffered the same total tear of the ACL, MCL and PCL.

Personally I would love nothing more than to see a 2004 Daunte Culpepper out there playing but J.J. is just being realistic. Daunte did look lost out there so much so that at times you had to wonder if his career was over. J.J. is just the first one to have the cojones to come right out and say what most all the analysts have been hinting at but afraid to outright say.

It sucks because if Joey doesn't pull this team out of the dumpster we are likely still going to be a team looking for a QB come next season.

I don't understand how his knee affected his brain

I think in the past Daunte being an effective runner has helped him overcome his deficiencies in reading the D allowing him to scramble and buy that extra time he needs to find a receiver. And before he could run for positive yards if he didn't find a place to go with the ball, dosent look like he can do that anymore at this point.

I agree with JJ!! If you CPEP His decison making are poor!! i remember In minny he use to scramble and throw that rocket down to Moss or short passes to Wiggins and Rober Smth !! Onterrio Smith

I hope we draft one this time. No more retread qb's.

Here is my perspective on CULPEPPER and why I AGREE that he will NEVER again regain the success he had in MIN ...

1- When MOSS was 1st there, there was NOT A SINGLE CB that could handle him ... either with size, strength or speed. The EFFECTS of this mismatch were ABSOLUTELY ENORMOUS !

1a- He did NOT have to be accurate with his throws in MOSS' direction ... as any reasonably thrown ball was catchable

1b- MOSS' presence dictated single coverage or less for the weakside WR, TE, Slot, or RB. Which also vastly assisted in his completion percentage -- which most folks still attribute to 'accuracy' ...

2- His personal size and mobility also REQUIRED defenses to account for him ... thus again, giving him an advantage in the passing game.

3- He was patient, had mobility AND could ad lib on the fly .... which also gave him huge advantages downfield.

HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE RIGHT NOW -- PERIOD ... HE MIGHT NEVER AGAIN; albeit, he COULD get back 2 & 3 .... BUT NEVER 1.

Was CULPEPPER's success 100% MOSS, NO, but did MOSS have an extraordinary impact on his success at that time -- ABSOLUTELY !!

BOTTOM LINE is that we will NEVER again see CULPEPPER at the LEVEL he experienced in MIN ... Does that mean he is DONE --- well a classic pocket passer he is NOT .... but the next 6 months will live to tell the tale !!!

EVERY QBs success or failure is VERY MUCH tied to their environment --- does anyone really think that AIKMAN would be a HOF QB in HOUSTON without that line, SMITH, NOVACEK, MOOSE, IRVIN ....

We CANNOT recreate MIN .... what MIA needs is a QB that can make quick decisions, is mobile, can create plays with his feet and can still get the ball downfield .... and right NOW -- that is NOT CULPEPPER ... in fact it is only PARTIALLY HARRINGTON ... what we need is a YOUNG ELWAY !! ... but I would have settled for CUTLER ....
