Jackson's Monday sports buzz- Miller/Moreno and Why the run defese got worse

That's one side of the coin. Have you thought of the other? Patterson being healthier next season and plays alot more games?

Nope. and I dont want to. :d-day:

He has never played a full 16 games season and even think he has been injured every single year he has been in the league. When your made of glass its not if you break, its when you break.

LOL you know if he signs with the Jets he will have his first 16 game season and become an all pro

Our problem, even more than Phillip Wheelers play last year, was that we had no one behind him good enough to take his playtime. Think about that... as bad as Phillip Wheeler was at times last season, the next guy up was Jason Trusnik or some other nobody... players that were always getting burned even if they were only on the field for 5 or 6 plays.

So tired of Trusnik being here. Anyone remember him having contain on Kaepernick a couple years ago and he's such a terrible athlete that one Kaepernick turned up... Game over

Meh...I feel like I'm watching a Brandon Spikes during his time at UF Highlight. If, the play is coming straight at him...Okay. But, can he move consistently if it's not?

A quality LB in the draft is almost as important as the RT or OG that is left.
Hayden - I think that you are right. Have you had the opportunity to check out Borland from Wisconsin. It is wrong to compare but he plays a helluva lot like Zach Thomas. I think we should be able to get him in the 2nd round. Check out his highlight video.

A lot like Thomas. Physically and athletically not what you want but high motor and instincts

The scheme was as big of an issue as the linebackers in our run stopping problems. Too many stunts and shifting and not enough playing downhill, especially since last year we had a personnel advantage against just about every offensive line we faced. We should have been playing straight up and downhill way more than we were. It was stunning watching the all 22 at times, how we'd stunt ourselves right out of the way of a run and there's Ellerbe or Misi or Wheeler in the hole face up on an offensive lineman with a fullback in behind the OL.

Coyle needs to stop being too clever by half, especially since he didn't really show much feel for when to call the flashy stuff. I was hoping this year he'd realize the error of his ways but the Earl Mitchell signing told me he was doubling down on a great athlete, thinking that the problem was we just weren't executing the four billion stunts per game with enough speed. Unfortunately for us I think he's sadly mistaken.

WOW I rarely agree with ANYTHING you write, but you hit the nail on the head. Losing Big Paul and replacing him with Mitchell is the same kind of downgrade we made with our LBs last year, and I expect about the same kind of results. This idea of designing our defense around getting a team off the field on 3rd down is all well and good with one exception. If we are giving up our run defense in order to have a better 3rd down defense, the results will be our defense will be facing nothing but 3rd and 1s and 2s. That just simply isn't a recipe for success when they can simply run for the 1st on our weak run defense.

same with ellerbee , both these guys are fringe starters at best being paid like good linebackers

I don't see how line stunts force interceptions, honestly. The purpose of line multiple stunts and creative blitzes up front are to create negative yardage runs and sacks.

Not sure if you are being serious here or not, but I will play along any way. A player coming free from a stunt or twist in a QB's line of sight is a little different than a player beating his man and causing pressure. The difference is a player beating his man is much easier for a QB to manipulate by side stepping, or stepping up into the pocket. A man coming free is computed much more like a blitzer, which the QB recognizes as "there has to be a weakness from where the player is coming from" and I can beat the defense by throwing to that area. The act of self preservation causes the QB to have to make a snap decision and get rid of the ball to an area he HOPES is open, due either to his progression, or to him mistaken the free rusher as a blitzer.

QBs hate taking sacks, and will too often make bad throws rather than eat it.

You can go ahead and add Misi to that list while your at it. He is a solid backup and a fringe starter but will never be a play maker or game changer. I challenge anyone to find a 5 yr LB that has had as many snaps as Koa and has fewer game changing plays. We need to replace all 3. Koa was our worst LB statistically. And has been every year he has been on the team.

Not really. Not the one's that last, anyway.

I guess someone that has the time could research this issue, but I would be shocked if QBs, (this includes QBs that last) didn't make more mistakes when getting quick pressure than ones who were not pressured. :rolleyes2:
