When the Jaguars made tight end Julius Thomas the centerpiece of their March 2015 free-agent frenzy, the talk was about how he would improve the team’s passing game, the kind of player who could create match-up problems and catch touchdown passes from quarterback Blake Bortles.

Thomas was a disappointment, but the Jaguars should have kept him – they’re not in a position to jettison good players.

But what went wrong for Thomas and the Jaguars? We tried to explore that, crunching the numbers and talking to a league source.

Brother thanks for being a great member here. You help make the site what is today. I think this part says why we need to bring Sims or someone of very good blocking abilities in.

4. He didn’t block well enough.

Our game charting booked Thomas for 3 1/2 “bad” run plays in 2015 and four “bad” run plays last year, rushes that went for a one-yard gain (not counting short-yardage/goal-line), no gain or short yardage.

“His blocking was non-existent,” the source said. “If he was on the field, he was the second tight end and that meant a receiver came off the field and the team speed went down. And if he was on the field with Robinson, Hurns and Lee, it was a clear giveaway to defenses that it was a pass or a run away from him because he couldn’t be at the point of attack.”

Because of the blocking deficiencies, the source said, the Jaguars viewed Thomas as, “a 25-32 play guy so looking at 3-5 catches – one or two in the red zone or on third down. But expecting explosive plays out of him was going to be tough.”

Thanks FFIC..

I think it was well known he wasn't the best blocker, at least Gase knows how to use him so that will eliminate one of the reasons mentioned, some interesting stuff in that article though.

Particularly this thought..

“He’s a very specific player that, really, is hard for an [offensive staff] to game-plan for,” the source said. “In a true two-tight end system, he could put up better numbers because he would be on the field more and be treated as the third receiver. But to make a living doing that is tough because of the team-speed issue. Defenses are able to stay in base and stop the run and also with the speed of some linebackers, they were able to cover him man to man and were actually faster and more physical than Julius.”

This could be the sell point to Sims and also the insurance plan to Stills leaving..

I could see that. Or Gase has his eye on a 1st-2nd round receiver to replace Stills, possibly even willing to trade up to grab him

Imagine if Gase trades away our 2nd, 5th and say.. 2018 3rd to trade up for a receiver  people still talking about Carroo and Gase goes up and grabs another one.

There would definitely be a couple meltdowns on this site.

Any article with the intention to explain why Thomas didnt succeed in Jax that doesnt even mention Bortles once is flawed. Not that Im a big fan of the trade but come on...

True, I was expecting that to come up in point 1- "not enough downfield catches"

I mean, the guy had multiple 10+ TDs seasons with Peyton Manning, then goes in Jax where he plays with the worst QB in the NFL( arguably, I guess) and his production goes to the ****ter. There really is no need to overthink this, sometimes(most of the time) the obvious anwser is actually correct. For the writter to completely ignore it makes his article a waste of your time IMO...

I hear you and agree bro. He was probably thinking of his job security.

reasons why he didn't succeed in jax:

1) not used properly

2) bortles

3) the rest

Speed certainly was not an issue in Denver. In fact, that looked to be one of his greatest attributes. The added weight and the nagging injuries looked to have sapped some of his speed. Hopefully he can lose the weight and get healthy in Miami and become the weapon that he was when he was in Denver.

I think if OJ Howard is available when we pick we should still take him. That could give us a possible dynamic duo at TE and allow us to replace Stills with someone cheaper if he can't be retained.

If teams stay in base matched up with lbs he has to win otherwise this whole thing fails

Id be willing to bet that the jax oc and play caller isnt anywhere near as good as the miami one
