"The losing was just awful," Chuck Grove said. "It just eats on you. (Jake) once told us, you only have a short time to do this and the whole time the goal is to win."
But when the phone rang one night in early March, Jake Grove finally shared some good news - Bill Parcells and the Miami Dolphins had signed Grove to a five-year deal.
Since then, Chuck Grove hears something in his son's voice he'd almost forgotten.
"To me, Jake's as excited as he was when he got drafted," his father said. "He's rejuvenated."
Jake Grove feels a difference every day. In a word: stability.
"I like his aggressiveness," running back Ricky Williams said. "He jumps those nose guards. It's nice because that's where everything starts."
Grove's mean streak has caused quite a stir at Dolphins practice, even though the team will be in shorts until training camp opens in late July.
"I'm excited to see him out in pads because he seems like a really mean player," second-year left tackle Jake Long said.
