Hey good morning guys. As I sure you all know Stafford signed a huge contract with the Lions last night. Some 42 million guaranteed WOW. But as the title says looking back to our #1 pick JAKE EFFIN LONG looks like a steal at this point. Yes he is the highest paid linemen in the NFL but he is 12 million less guaranteed than Stafford who hasnt played a down and 2 less then Russell who has had a few good games but is nothing to write home about.

And dont get me wrong i know Qb is the most important position BUT Qb's dont have eyes in the back of their helmets so blindside protection is VASTLY more important than most give it credit for (not us Dolphin fans caue we are soooo smart). I just think getting a frachise LT who is a probowler and will anchor and line for a decade and protect our most valued assest year in and out makes Jake Long a steal at the money we paid him for.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure how a number one pick can be a steal..? He was paid less, but of course the first pick happening to be a QB will get paid more. But yes, we got a franchise LT that will be great for us for many years.

Some of that extra money is due to having a six year deal though. Long's is only a five.

Here's how Peter King breaks it down:

"The Stafford deal is a significant increase over last year's first-round pick, Jake Long, the tackle who was picked by the Miami Dolphins.

Long's deal averaged $10 million per year on minimum playing time, and $11.5 million per year achieving maximum incentives. Stafford's deal is $12 million a year with minimum playing time and $13 million per year with incentives."

A bit more for Stafford potentially, though he could ride the pine initially to keep his salary in year one or two closer to that of Jake's.

Stafford won't have the LT he will need that is for sure.As for Jake Long-he was the right person to go #1 last year,I'm not sure Stafford is the worthy of being the first this draft.

Long is in for another huge payday 1 year earlier than most of his peers. We'll probably be agonizing over/sweating out his resigning for at least a year before that. To that end, wish it had been a 6 year deal, even if for more $$

.

I think he is worthy. Last year I think there were two right answers for us .
Jake Long or Matt Ryan.
The lions have pick 20 they can find a lineman there. Its opposite from last year. We could not have found a left tackle oddswise in second round, well odds are they would be taking a huge stepdown in qb and none to pick at 20. Best move they could make although Curry was a right answer also. Smith I think was a huge risk at number one.

I don't think a #1 draft pick would ever be considered a steal, but I will say that I'm glad we had the top pick in last years draft, rather then this year. Maybe Stafford will be great but I really have no idea. With Long, it seemed like everyone was pretty confident that at worst, he would be a quality left tackle in the league for a long time. When you miss on a quarterback, it can kill a franchise for a decade.

The highest player in the league at his position may well be a fair deal (he isn't the best LT in the league yet, he does look promising and I think he was the right pick), but it definitely is not a steal.

Stafford's signing bonus was high because of the supposed premium paid for QB's. If the first pick had been Jason Smith, his signing bonus would have been right in line with Jake's.

I believe the Lions made the wrong choice. Don't get me wrong. I would rather have Stafford than any QB on our roster. Normally the Stafford choice would be the right thing. But not for the Lions. Not Now. What good is it to bring in a young franchise QB when he has no protection? Such situations ruined David Carr and Tim Couch. The Lions had 2 first-round picks. Their first pick should have been Jason Smith. That shores up LT. You either trade the second first-round pick, or draft for need (and the Lions have a lot). Taking a tight end was stupid for them (after they took stafford at 1, you MUST take a LT with that 20th pick). If the Lions had taken Smith at no.1, they save money and get a huge need. You then play a veteran QB (should have gone after Jeff Garcia) and let him get beat up. The Lions will have a miserable season again (4-12 would be huge for them) and can take a QB next year (I know that no front office believes that way. You can't if you want to have long-term success, but I'm being realistic).

To get back to the Fins, I wish we had been in a position to take Michael Oher and make him our RT. I do like the Davis pick though. We need corners.
