It’s nothing against Long, rather the nature of the beast at left tackle. By Joyner’s reasoning, Long could become one of the top LTs in the game and John Beck still could be running for his life.

that is true however...Jake can be solid, and yet the QB has to be able to trust his blindside pick up.....

I however don't agree, but its possible, and for most teams its a reality....I think thats the biggest issue IMO with him last season...he was always trying to run around and panicing on pass rusher and that cause him to fumble...a lot...and throw some INTS and fall on the ground....but thats normal for a rookie and even some vets. do it,so dont look too much into it,but then again,we didnt have the o-lien then that we have now,so i think John will get used to it....QB's trusting their LT or RT(for left handed QB's because they face the other way)...but Beck has been truely sucessful in college with his o-line,so i think that'll carry him a long way in the pros...:hi5:

i actually think this is where HENNE will have a slight edge.

he played with jake for 4 years and has the utmost trust in him.

beck has NO history with long and still has a lot of nerves to shake
off after last years season ending drubbings. no matter who is behind
beck, he will still be hearing the foot steps for a while.

and it appears that this is haunting him still as reports through camp
have him doing ok untill he gets defenders around him and then he
panics.

today it was reported that yesterday, they did a 2 play rotation with
the qb's with the starters. 2 sets of 2 play rotations.

beck did good his first time.

the second set, the defense was getting there and he choked big time!!

the kid can throw. no doubt. but you can not coach out a guys fear
of being sacked and coughing the ball up every time he is touched.

long way to go, but i think there is a distinct edge with henne having
jake long in with him. and i think jake is comfortable with henne as
he knows him so well and they have been through so many battles.

The line has to start somewhere and it often starts with a good LT and a good center, we have both right now and the best part of it is they are young

but the MOST underrated factor for having a good Oline is continuity... you need 5 guys who will work WELL together and to do that, they need time to learn how to play with each other....

Jake Long brings us a start at Left Tackle (should we call it a start? we were already started with Satele and Carey) and Jake also brings youth and an opportunity to work with those guys for years

Jake Long was the right call in every aspect. I'm looking forward to a dominant Oline in years to come like the one KC had a couple seasons ago

Yea, and Henne's so mobile that Jake can escort him down the field too.:sidelol:

Who would be our LT right now if we didn't select Jake?

Yea Vernon . . . but then who is the RT?

Simply put, he was considered BPA by several people and he happened to fill the biggest need and he is in the mold of the type of lineman that Parcells covets.

We needed to address this line . . . and we did just that. Obviously if we could have traded down, maybe we could have taken a different tackle . . . but that didn't happen, and Jake is the best of the bunch . . . easy pick.

I don't trust beck. screw who he trusts. call me a skeptic, but i'm not looking for a 26 year old second year quarterback with a tragically terrible beginning to be my franchise man. Same goes for McCown. The testing Henne took and scrutiny that accompanies being a michigan QB is similar to NFL pressure.

Yes, Jake Long was the right choice for this team. The key is "for this team". As the artical points out Carey only gave up 3 sacks which is great. However, the defense could almost ignore Carey and just run right through the guards and right tackle at will. Compounded by the fact that Martin couldnt block my grandmother there was no QB on this team that had a chance. The choice of Long has allowed Carey to go back to his natural position at RT and anchor that side of the line. So in essence by drafting Long the Dolphins have solidified TWO positions on this line.

The premise of that artical is that the author is saying the LT is no more important than any other position on the line. I would have to partially agree. The OL consits of 5 guys and it is only as strong as its weakest player.
