Greetings fin fans, i'm back, not that i was gone but my work was. Yes, after a harsh midterm period, i'm back and fulfilling my finheaven duty
Those who haven't seen my work earlier this season and are new to this, i'd highly suggest that you read the first line of this thread to get a feel of what's being done http://www.finheaven.com/forums/f2/jake-longs-play-analysis-week-3-a-229955.html?highlight=jake+long+play
As usual, i'll rate jake by bad, neutral and good plays. RunLS stands for run on the left side and you probably can figure out what RunRS means :d-day:
I won't bold anything, it's kinda late and i've been working on it for hours so i don't really bother for those who don't bother reading the whole thing haha!
Enjoy guys, as for the ravens game, i might do it next week but i don't guarantee anything, i'll do the denver game before obviously and i'll see after that. talking about denver, I thought it might be interesting to put my work into analysing another trench player... kendall langford has been praised a lot this year and it could be interesting to rewatch his play. Anways, i'll let the votes decide !
1st quarter:
drive #1 (15:00)
1&10: Pass. Jake gets a little help as fasano gives a little shove to what seems to be chris kelsay. He makes a nice play helping Smiley with his man and then taking a step back to take care of kelsay. *** on a sidenote, ikechuke ndukwe handles marcus stroud one on one, pretty neat *** Very good play
1&10: Pass. this is a three step drop where chad releases it in the nick of time. Jake doesn't have a hard task allowing almost a 1½ second of protection, but still makes his block. Good play
2&4: RunLS out of the wildcat, jake is at his normal position. Jake pulls to the left side but there is no one to block, he comes back inside to help david martin but when jake is about to help him, he takes his guy completely out of the pla ... the execution was really awkward but it looks like if ronnie would've been able to run behind jake he could've gone very far. I'll give a good play grade because he stuck to his assignment and adjusted afterwards. awkward but good play.
3&1: RunM. Jake and smiley double team #95. The angle doesn't show a lot on that play, the cameraman did a poor job... the bottom line is the two linemen took the bill defender out of the play so i'll give a good play grade.
1&10: RunRS. They fake the FB dive and toss it to ricky. Jake is not on the playside but you got to love the effort. Jake releases from the line very quickly to attack the OLB and block him. Even though his imput is not big i see nice hustle and nice speed, good play.
2&5: RunM out of the wildcat, jake is at LT. Jake actually pulls to the right side and helps out Ndukwe. Jake seems a little out of position but after looking over and over, i noticed the defensive linemen hold him for a second, disrupting jake's timing and direction. Jake still manages to reach out the right side and effectively help Ndukwe on his block. Good play.
1&10: Pass. Jake makes a very good block one on one against #92 denney. Once again he doesn't turn his shoulders before the defender is on the same yard as he is and trusts his speed to follow him outside, being a former DE i really hate/love () to see this . Good play.
2&3: RunRS. Jake makes a very good one on one block. In fact, this whole play is perfectly executed by the offence. Fasano, jake, lousaka and smiley all made key blocks that were perfectly executed on that right side. The one reason why it got stopped is because Polznusly who was on the backside made a tremendous play, scraping the line and closing in to tackle Ronnie, it really was a textbook play from the bill linebacker reading and reacting well. Good play by jake nonetheless.
3&1: Pass. Jake goes low on the DE and it must've been designed that way. Him and carey chop blocked the defensive ends on both respective sides in order to help chad have a better view of the endzone and the throwing lanes to david martin and fasano. From that view, i can't fully see how effective his block was but i can tell you that his player was never near Chad so it must've bottered him enough. Anyways at this level, chop blocks rarely are that much effective because the D-linemen have so much playing years behing their belt that they instinctively get out of it pretty fast (on most of them as i've said, not all). Good play (touchdooooown)
drive #2 (4:15):
1&10: Pass. This is a playaction where jake gets a little help from fasano. As the TE is heading upfield he runs in the Defensive end to enhance the looks of a run play and then quickly releases to run his route. Jake ultimately ends up facing the defensive end in a dangerous situation: there's a lot of space around jake AND the defensive end is far from him. As a defender you usually are thrilled by the occasion because you can either make what i call a "head-fake" ( faking with your head and a sidestep that you want to go one way and quickly bounce off that step in the other direction and rip through that side... had to talk about it, it was my favorite move when playing hehe) or you can simply catch the tackle by surprise and bull rush him and that usually works because the Oline is staying light on his feet in order to counter an anticipated finesse move.
Back to the play, what happened is the bill defender chose that option because jake gave him nothing outside so he bullrushed his way slightly inside jake but 77 blocked the path to pennington. Very good play by jake cutting the DE's decision to one place only and then stepping in his face to seal the deal. It might've seemed like a dull block to some (maybe all blocks look dull to some LOL) but it looked good to me. It was a good opportunity for the defender. Good play.
1&10: RunRS. Let me start off by saying almost every block wasn't well executed. Jake and smiley double team #96 Bryan. They do a good job initially blowing him off 3-4 yards back but when smiley releases to block a linebacker jake loses control of the bill defender that awkwardly spins on himself and runs back to jump on a pile of players as the whistle blows. This is not a good play by jake but i'm not ready to give him a bad play grade for the simple reason that if other linemates made their blocks accordingly, ronnie would've had the time to run through the hole well before jake lost control of his guy. On a sidenote, Satele was responsible at 90%, failing to block marcus stroud who gets a 3-4 yard penetration and completely disrupts the play but it was a bad situation for satele... one on one block and it's pretty clear watching the tape that stroud's assignment was to shoot the playside gap so the margin of error was quite high for that play. Neutral play.
2&10 RunRS out of the Wildcat, jake is @ TE on the right side. Great one on one block against #92 Ryan Denney. Hand placement is good, drives his feet and ultimately drags denney 2-3 yard back. good battle going on but jake obviously won that one. Good play.
1&10 RunLS. It's a draw play and once again, for those who read other game analysis, i'm not satisfied by jake's performance on the draw. This was the worse time IMO. He opens his shoulders and the DE bites at the look of the passing play but once he read the draw, he quickly came back to almost make the tackle ( the tackle was made a second before). Jake did an OK job, but i'd like to see him finish those blocks/plays. The problem is either jake didn't have the speed or he didn't provide the effort to reach the defender and engage him. BUT, once again, his questionable block wasn't the one who caused the failure of the play, it was another linemates' man. Ronnie wouldn't have been bothered by the DE if the tacklers would've been blocked sooo, i'll give a neutral play to jake.
2&7 Pass. Quick slant to London. Jake doesn't have a big job because of the quick release. I'll give a good play for two reasons though, he showed quick feet bursting into #96 Bryan AND his man didn't bat down the pass, which happens at times on those throws. good play.
3&1 Run LS. This is the play where ricky bounced back 20 yards or so and didn't get the first anyways... Jake actually did a very good block. The problem was either smiley or polite, both missed on the guy who made initial contact with ricky and thus killed the play. I'm not sure who's fault it is because both guys kinda glared at the defender, justin was there first and realized he was there too late and was out of position so he headed towards the cornerback to block him and then polite completely whiffed on him as he seemingly didn't see the bill defender.... Good play by jake
2nd Quarter:
Drive #3 ( 12:41 )
1&5 (encroachment on the play before, play whistled dead at the snap): RunLS. Jake makes a good block on ryan denney but his job is kind of easy because denney shoots towards the middle and the play. It was designed to go to the right side quite obviously by looking at the blocking scheme but there's such a gaping hole in the middle that ricky can't resist (and fumbles...ughhh ). Jake took denney completely out of the play. Good play.
Drive #4 (8:17)
1&10: Pass. Jake is lined up at TE on the right side, awkward this isn't the wildcat. This is a playaction and some might think jake missed on his guy but simply put, they faked the handoff to ronnie on the right and he was the blocker responsible for the EMOL (end man on the line). Jake let him go and quickly watched around for any late blitzes or stunts coming his way. Might seem bad to some but it really isn't, good play.
2&10: Pass. Jake faces ryan denney one on one and makes an excellent play. He cuts off the way to the outside and when denney tries to squeeze inside jake with a "swim-move" , jake punches him and keeps him away from chad. Good play.
2&5: Pass. Jake faces #59 and does a good job. This guy is pretty fast but jake keeps up with him and when he's about to converge his rush inside, towards chad, jake turns his shoulders and drives the defender away. good play.
Drive #5 (4:00)
1&10: Pass. this is the screen pass to ricky williams. Some might've thought jake had problems here but he actually did a good job. Chad is dropping back 12-13 yards back before throwing the pass so when you are a defensive end rushing, it's pretty easy to run around a Tackle, whoever it is, when it's a 10yards+ drop back lol but the fact is, The screen had enough time to get set up perfectly so in the end jake fulfilled his duty, buying enough time to make the play happen. good play
1&10: pass. Quick hitch to ginn on the left. I really like jake's effort here. He punches the DE to get him upfield/out of the play and then quickly releases off the line to go after another guy. He didn't found no one because the pursuit was very good but he made a good play. Not to mention once again that he prevented a tipped pass.
2&5: Pass. Jake is on an island against #96 and makes an excellent block. Nothing to say. Perfect play.
1&10: Pass. jake faces #96 again and here he struggles a bit on a bull rush, the initial contact was violent but jake's strenght took over afterwards and sealed the deal. good play.
2&14: Pass. Jake faces ryan denney one on one and shuts, him, down ! very good play.
3&14: RunLS. this is the reverse to camarillo. Jake actually heads in the other direction and it was probably designed that way to bait the defenders that side, faking the run. Jake doesn't do a whole lot considering no one bit and attacked the end around so i won't even rate that play
3rd Quarter:
Drive #6 (10:17)
1&10: pass. This is a playaction where fasano stays to the house and helps jake on pass protection. Jake actually has no one to block because fasano takes on the blitzing OLB who's lined up way outside and smiley takes care of the DE that slants inside the line. Jake still does a nice job of giving a little push to the DE and then stepping back and make sure no one slants in his gap. He shows good awareness and speed. good play.
1&15(following delay of game): RunLS. Nice battle going on between jake and denney. What i dislike is that jake didn't really maul him back. What i like though is to see the feet pumping from the beginning to the end, that's good technique. In the end i have to give a good play grade to jake because his man didn't disrupt the play and jake did a very good job technically.
2&11: Pass. There's a lot to say about this play. First off i tip my hat to jake for being smart and adjusting to the stunt between the DE and the DT #95. Jake and smiley adjusted well and picked up the stunt effectively. Some might think jake got beat here but the reality is IF he got beat, well, it was by ronnie brown. Jake does a nice job blocking #95 but ronnie ends up colliding in the back of jake's knee who instantly falls to the ground and loses his player. I'd also like to mention that it wasn't jake's guy that made the sack, well before ronnie ran into jake another bill defender was taking chad to the ground. I have to give a good play grade for the initial adjustment and because his guy didn't make the play. On a sidenote, evan mathis caused that play... people thought ronnie picked up the wrong guy but what happened is mathis had a guy lined up in front of him and at the snap, he slanted towards satele. At the same time polznulsny (spelling?) blitzed at evan's vacated gap. Ronnie's assignment was to block #43 coming from the outside but when he saw Paul coming in like a raging bull he had to switch duties to avoid any serious hit or injury on chad. Sparano must've yelled a few remarks to mathis on this play ...
3&19: Pass. Jake faces denney one on one, very good protection, flawless. Good play.
Drive #7: (5:54)
1&10: Pass. Jake faces denney one on one once again and the trend continues, flawless pass blocking on a tempted speed rush. Good play.
2&4: RunLS out of the wildcat, jake is at his natural position. Jake takes on #95 one on one and completely takes him out of the play. Very good play.
1&10: Pass. This play is similar to the playaction where fasano punched the DE and released to run his route. I actually think it's the same darn play (once again it worked !). Jake gets help with a little push from fasano but he 's doing a tremendous job not overcommiting to the DE, he stays near smiley to help him out a little and keeps an eye on #92 denney. They don't have time to engage contact, the ball is thrown, but i really liked the awareness and the footspeed here. Good play.
1&10: Pass. Jake faces denney ONCE again. This time, denney tries to cut inside of jake because, well, he hasn't had success outside AND the fastest way to get to chad "i get rid of the ball fast" pennington is the shortest way, inside. Jake reacts well, steps in and engages denney to prevent any threat to chad. Good play !
1&10: RunLS. Jake and smiley double team #97 (i didn't check the roster but isn't this McCargo? who BTW is a tough mothermmmmer ?) they maul him in an old-fashioned way and pave a nice hole for ronnie. Good play.
2&7: Pass. Wonderful, WONDERFUL adjustment by the whole left side of the line here. let me start off by saying Polz is blitzing, you've got #93 and #97 on that side. No help from skill players so it's 5vs5 basically, and 3vs3 on the left side. The bill do a stunt , which means the DE crashes all the way towards satele, his goal is to try to attract smiley that way, then the DT slants outside to attack jake. What that is suposed to create is a rushing lane between smiley and jake for Polz but smiley did a very good job staying home and not biting on the bait ! Jake did a very good job adjusting as well and made a very good block on #97. Pretty nice play by everyone.
1&goal: RunLS out of the wildcat, jake is at LT. Very good one on one block against #95. Good play.
2&goal: RunLS. This is the TD toss to ricky williams. Jake pulls outside to block the OLB #56. this play is designed to go on the sideline and should Ricky have run it that way, he would've gotten the TD anyways because jake was in perfect position to seal off the playside linebacker from the play. Good play !
4th quarter:
Drive #8 (14:46)
1&10: RunRS out of the wildcat, jake is lined up at TE on the right. Jake blocks kelsay one on one and does a good job. It's not an easy task because he has to reach kelsay's outside shoulder and keep position on him. Kelsay is a very good defender but jake did a very good job, quickly taking position in front of kelsay and prevent him to seal the edge. Good play.
2&9: Pass. Quick slant to camarillo. Easy task for jake but he still made the block and it was a good one. Good play.
3&3: Pass. The offensive line slides to the right and jake has to handle the DT. He does a good job reaching the player and engaging him. The funny thing is he almost overran to the right and slightly was out of position, but he still made his block. On a sidenote we were really lucky not to get flagged here because ronnie came to help jake and chop blocked the guy while jake was still blocking... if i'm right this is a 15 yard penalty on ronnie and that would've taken us out of field goal range... whew ! In the end good play by jake.
Drive #9 (11:38)
1&10: Pass. Jake has an easy job here because it's a playfake to the left and chad rolls out to the right... he still makes a good block taking on the DE one on one. good play.
2&4: RunLS. I'd really like to analyze that play but the truth is they are lined up in some sort of goalline or short yardage package where the oline's split is smaller, so i can see the play but the angle is not good at all and can barely see the execution so i won't rate the play... if i had to guess though, by the looks of it, jake pounded a guy 1 or 2 yard back, so i'd give a good play, but i won't rate it.
3&1: RunLS. Once again it's hard to see the play but it's easier than the other one. Jake took care of his guy and drove him back a yard or two. good play
1&10: Pass. Jake and smiley double team the DT because fasano is staying home, blocking the DE. Nice teamwork, good play.
1&10: Pass. This is a quick hitch to the right. Jake's job is easy on those kind of plays but i really like the hustle. He punches the DE in front of him and quickly runs to the second level to find anyone to block. I've praised jake for his effort and "not taking a rep off" attitude from the beginning and it's nice to see it week in and week out. good play.
2&7: Pass. This is one play i've been waiting for a long time: a long pass protection. From the beginning of the year i've seen quick releases from chad and that is not that big of a challenge for an offensive lineman from a protection standpoint... instead of 1-2-3 second pass protections, jake had to handle on his own ryan denney for 4½second and succeeded. Chad needed time and it's nice to see jake was able to give him some. Good play.
3&7: Pass. Jake faces ryan denney and he basically cost us the play. The De makes a speed rush and jake just can't follow him. Chad reacts and quickly throws the ball away to avoid a sack. It's pretty weird though because jake initially looked sharp, move his feet and keeping position but when the DE and jake got about 5 yards back the LOS, jake seemed to let him go as if he thought chad wouldn't drop back that far. I'm not putting any excuses but i think it's more of a mental lapse than a "physical loss". Bad play by jake.
Drive #10 ( 7:33)
1&10: Pass. Another quick pass by chad and jake makes a good play in an easy situation against #90. Good play.
2&10: Pass. I won't rate the play because the broadcast missed the first two seconds of the play so i can't really review the play...
1&10: RunLS. Jake pulls to the outside on that toss to ronnie. Nice speed, but jake had nothing to do really. The first two players he crossed were too far to make the play so he continues to run and crosses david martin blocking a guy but martin is doing a fine job, so what's left for jake ? well the big man sees donte whitner and runs towards him but he's too far and too slow to get to him. I like jake's judgement, not blocking people who won't affect the play and try to find other players who will. Good play.
**some might think, well, the play went for a loss, howcome not blocking anyone could've been good ? well, the two players who made the tackle were #59 mitchell whom was vernon carey's assignment and #43, patrick cobbs' guy. Those two missed blocks cost us the play, not jake.
2&12: Pass. Here's another playaction to the left side bootleg to the opposite. Jake's job is once again easier because of the design of the play but he still makes his block. You gotta give him a good play.
1&10: RunLS. Jake blocks ryan denney one on one and makes a very good block. His job is made easier because Denney's responsibility obviously was to attack jake's inside shoulder and jake's assignment was, well, to block denney to the inside. Nonetheless he made a very nice block and paved a nice hole for ronnie. Good play.
2&3: RunLS. Jake's job is to release from the line and attack #59 mitchell. Jake gets good initial contact but loses mitchell who runs to the outside to make the tackle. People might think jake cost us the play but the reality is ronnie and the fullback made two mistakes. Polite blocked his guy but allowed him to get a slight position on the inside. Ronnie was suposed to go in that hole, so ronnie bounced outside but what he should've done is cut outside of lousaka and run right back in the hole. Jake never thought the LB would attack the sideline like he did and wasn't prepared for that kind of block because, well, it wasn't designed that way at all. I will give a good play to jake even though people might not agree, jake cannot see what's happening in his back, it's ronnie's job to run where he's suposed to and if he did just that he would've gained a yard or two instead of losing some. Good play by jake.
3&7: RunRS out of the wildcat with jake at TE on the right. Jake blocks #90 and initially makes good contact but he gets flat out beat by the DE who sheds jake and makes the tackle. Bad play by jake.
CONCLUSION:
47/51 good plays
2/51 neutral plays
2/51 bad plays
Jake had an overrall good game, not as good as the ones against the chargers or the patriots but not as bad as the texans game. one of the bad plays was due to a mental lapse or a lack of communication and the other one was a nice play by jake's opponent, shedding 77 to make the tackle.
Jake got a little help from fasano today, more than usual but you're talking about 3 or 4 plays so i wouldn't say it's a lack of confidence thing. It had more to do with the staff's philosophy of attacking a lot through the air on first downs with playaction passes. Those are often designed with the TE faking a run block on the DE, engaging him, and then releasing to run his route. That's where jake got a little help but nothing more.
In the run blocking department, he made some good plays but i don't feel he played his best football "today", i've seen him maul some guys through other games and i didn't feel he was that dominant in the bills game. Then again, kelsay and denney are very good defensive ends so that might have something to do with it.
talking about those two, jake allowed one rusher to get past him in the whole game and it was kelsay if my memory is correct, so that's what i'd call an overrall good performance in the pass protection department.
Overrall good game for jake, he had 2 major miscues but the other 49 snaps were average at worst, and 47 of them were good. Watch out jake, here comes denver... or should i say... watch out denver, here comes the dolphins
