While Long has been practicing with his teammates for a little over a week he’s not optimistic he’ll play in Thursday night’s exhibition game against the Cowboys.
Long would love to play, but he’s aware coach Tony Sparano is against it. And on Tuesday Sparano admitted Lydon Murtha’s uncertain status (undisclosed injury) won’t change his mind about keeping the franchise tackle in bubble wrap before playing him in the season-opener against the New England Patriots.
[Soooo, if Murtha doesn't play, exactly who plays left tackle???????]
“I haven’t practiced in a while so the first couple days back I’ve been getting my legs back, and my arms back to punching,” Long said. ”It’s coming along good and the more I practice the better I’ll feel. I’ll knock [the rust] off and be good to go.”
Long prides himself on his tough guy image, and his streak of not missing a single game (even a week after his knee scope). But he understands where Sparano’s coming from, protecting one of the team’s biggest assets and key cogs.
“He’s the boss. Whatever he says I’ll do,” Long said.
Long thinks practice is enough right now because “we go live, and we go hard against a great defense.
