DAVIE -- With pick No. 186 in the 2016 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins selected diminutive speed wide receiverJakeem Grant out of Texas Tech. Grant was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but he made certain scouts noticed him during his pro-day in Lubbock, Texas when he was timed anywhere between 4.10 and 4.34 in the 40-yard dash.

The Dolphins are very excited about what he can bring to the table in the return game and at the wide receiver position, but he is still a rookie and he has encountered his fair share of struggles in his short time in the NFL. During OTAs as well as minicamp, Grant at times has struggled with getting in and out of his breaks without stumbling. He also has had difficulty holding on to the football during drills.

I asked Dolphins head coach Adam Gase about Grant and he said, "I think the [Dolphins] offense is a little different than what he [Jakeem Grant] did in college, and the terminology is obviously a little more than what they [Texas Tech] did. He's done a good job of picking everything up. Sometimes, it's almost like we got to slow him down.

"He's so fast that he's kind of got to learn to play at that speed, be able to cut, stop. ... You'll see him slipping every once in a while and that's when he's going to fast. So if we can just get him under control as far as how he understands that you pulling back a little bit is still faster than everybody else. Once he realizes that, he's going to really make strides there and be able to really have a great route tree."

Move along. Nothing to see here.

A week ago the reports from tanny was he is making plays all over the field. I think the "difficult adjustment" to the nfl was a rediculous comment. When he cant get off the line, cant break out on returns, thats when he's having a "dificult time".

Agreed.

Sounds like it stated that Jakeem is MAKING the difficult adjustment, not having DIFFICULTY making the adjustment.

I thought that too at first, but the article it-self it saying he's supposedly having difficulty

When it comes to rookies, especially those drafted on day three, it's not about do they make errors or have holes in their game. It's more about are the errors they make correctable and do they seem have the ability to grasp and make the corrections needed. It should never come as a shock that any day three draft pick is struggling at something.

The guy is going to have to display some hands of glue and he can't fumble on returns. Once a guy his size displays unreliable hands, his NFL window slams shut because he has no other value. To small to be a gunner on special teams and you can't convert him to defense.

I don't think he needs to show hands of glue. He just needs to show that he can make enough plays when he has the ball. If you can make four or five plays per game teams will work with you on the other areas. A slot receiver who drops a couple of four or five yard passes isn't much worse than one that catches them all but can't make plays after he has the ball. He would of course have to work on improving his hands and show that in time, but i he's making plays teams will give him some time. Look at Ted Ginn. He still makes drops, but he makes enough plays over the course of the game that teams are still willing to play him.

Under Philbin, a guy like Grant would never ever see the field. We'll see whether Gase will be willing to take the risk of adding playmaking ability at the expense of precision route running or potential drops, etc.

Dolphins fans are SO beat down now (even myself) that we refuse to get excited about ANYTHING.

We have collectively gotten the tar kicked out of us.

That said -its a new regime - and they have managed to create a stir without making big splashes.

I LOVE this pick because Grant is a no lose for the Dolphins.

If he succeeds Gase is a genius.

If he fails well no-one expected much and he is a 3rd day pick.

I think he makes it big.

He is another body type - another potential mismatch that could drive a team crazy.

A waterbug with a chip on his shoulder! I love it!!!

Its not the size of the dog in the fight its the size of the fight in the dog!

Hmm. Sounds kind of discouraging to me. It sounds like he has bad balance which can really put a damper on his impact on the football field. His incredible speed really doesn't matter if he is gonna be tripped up by blades of grass. It's better to be a Jarvis Landry and be resilient without great speed than a player who can run really fast but get tripped up easily. We'll see come preseason.

Couldn't be any worse than Brian Hartline tripping over. The one key for Jakeem is that he is the 4th, 5th or 6th receiver and not the 2nd wide-out for the team. If he makes the team, I would expect him to be very quiet except for 1-2 games where he makes a few key plays. If he becomes a kick returner or punt returner then who knows what kind of impact he might have?

Yes Hartline tended to trip and he was pretty much allergic to touchdowns, but he was a beast against man coverage on the outside and at least when he had success in Sherman's scheme he wasn't asked to catch and run like they are going to do with Grant. Hartline had real uses as a football player in the right scheme and if Grant can't stay on his feet, his time in the NFL will not be long.
