Here's a look at how 1st rounder's have done in preseason. In no way does it mean that a pick is good or bad but, does show somewhat how much they will be helping their teams this year.

On the OL, #2 pick Robinson has been benched, and moved between OT and OG. Matthews struggled at RT, moved to LT and bad on the run. Lewan is playing 2nd team. Martin has done well at RG.

Overall, it does appear that James is the most NFL ready to help his team this year, and a VG pick.

This O-line will be pretty decent as the year goes on, especially after Pouncey comes back. We just have to find a way of not tanking the season early - first four are key.

Around here, Ted SlimmJr was one of the only draft gurus enthusiastic about James.... which I found encouraging. Way too soon to tell, but it looks like he's leaning towards "more right than wrong."

I've barely herd James name all camp or preseason...and for a starting rookie right tackle, that's a great thing. Hopeful that trend continues.

James is the only 1st round OL that was asked to play the same position he played in college. Lewan, Robinson, Martin, and Matthews were all asked to switch positions. I think James has played well enough so far, but its not fair to compare him to the other picks based on 3 preseason games.

I still can't figure out why St. Louis passed on Sammy Watkins to draft a guy to play OG

From what I've seen from him so far he actually look pretty decent. He's been beat a few times but I think going against someone of wakes caliber has helped him drastically. I'm no line expert like omar but I like what I've seen and heard so far.

Jake Matthews has been getting eaten alive at RT during camp. His emergency switch to his natural LT position hasn't been getting rave reviews either. I'm sure he'll level out and regain composure.

One thing is for sure, Hickey needed to nail a starting RT in the draft in the early rounds. Criticized at first, Hickey's pick has looked the best fit for his team thus far. And frankly, I don't care if we needed a LT, RT or G. And I don't care about excuses for other top T's play thus far.

We needed an NFL ready RT and Hickey got us one.

And let's be clear about how good the absence of his name really indicates his success thus far.... he faces 2 double digit sack DE's every day in practice. He's stepped in and done his job against some of the best DE's in the game and the worst thing people can say about him is "let's wait and see".

Wait all ya want. He's just gonna get better playing against those 2 every day.

How good has Hickey been in the offseason? He rebuilt an entire offensive line in one offseason. We will have 5 new starters on opening day. And the least of our worries this offseason has been the word "sack".

That's impressive.

It's true. I don't remember the dude getting a single holding call in the preseason and for any rookie to already avoid being an obvious chink the in armor that opposing Ds scheme against is a great testament to his ability to hold is own out there. The best thing is that for a rookie, we're not hearing comments about him needing to get physically stronger, or having an inability to hold the point of attack, which already puts him way beyond other guys that we've drafted recently (Attn: Martin and Dallas Thomas: that you means you bums).
I think the smartest thing our staff has done is not overwhelm the dude with tasks that he's not ready or able to do, like being a starting left tackle.
If teams try to deliberately attack him with their best pass rusher than we just attack to the other side with one of the best LTs in the game in Albert.

This does speak to the way offensive linemen can be overrated in importance, which is why taking Jake Long over Matt Ryan was so dumb. An OT doesn't have to come in the league as a top 5 OT right off the bat. He just can't be the worst and can't be an obvious weakness that opposing defenses attack relentlessly. Juwan James is neither and is good enough for us to run our offense and be effective and that's all you need.

James has been solid so far.

He's a tough kid. Although he went to high school with my son at North Gwinnett, he's originally from Paterson. Not too many pansies come out of Paterson, NJ.

I hope he continues to do well.

I always liked the pick because he's playing his natural position which he excelled in at the college level. It's funny though, if he was playing poorly this thread would've already been 5 pages long by now.

Zounds is right that it's way too early to start crowing about this, for a number of reasons.

But James has been rock solid in pass protection, and after a few years of Colombo/Martin/Clabo, that's a very welcome thing.

Matthews struggling has been surprising and his move to LT was because Baker got hurt and may be gone for the season for the Falcons.

Zach Martin has looked solid at RG.

Robinson has incredible potential but he's probably having issues picking up the playbook given he played for Gus Malzhan and his "color by numbers" playbook. Anyone remember Cam Newton's interview with John Gruden...."give me a play"....Newton "38"....Gruden..."38??"...Newton..."Yeah, 38 that's a play". It's not like Robinson went to a school that actually cared about his education lol. It's going to take some time but I'm pretty sure he'll get it.

Lewan, to me, was an enigma. Talent he has, the head is what I question.

No crowing involved, just looking at all we have to look at so far. As I mentioned, it's way too early to tell who is good and bad but, James has looked like the right pick for our team this year.

Now we need two more right picks at LG and RG...although I think Turner can fill one of those spots eventually.
