The signing of cornerback Tye Hill to a contract with the St. Louis Rams on Sunday could bring ''significant and positive'' movement in the stalled talks between the Dolphins and safety Jason Allen, according to a source.

Hill, picked just before Allen at No. 15, signed a five-year deal. That sets the table for Allen to get a five-year deal as well, according to the source.

The sides were expected to resume discussions this morning.

I don't think the Dolphins have a choice anymore. Sign Jason Allen to a five year deal, or find a new starting free safety for the start of the season.

But this sounded encouraging.

The need to just bite the bullet and give him the5 yr deal. On top of Hill, Young, Simms, Huff and Ngata all got 5 yr deals. That has to lessen their power. I'm glad they tried for the extra year but he is missing camp and is 1 of 4 unsigned 1st rounders.

I don't know about that, didn't Reggie Bush sign a 6 year deal?
Bush was picked well before either.

I'm fine with the Phins playing hardball.

Bush doesn't really factor in IMO. He was a top-3 pick and before this year, 6 year deals were only common at the very top of the draft.......so he would have had a 6 year deal under the old CBA too. These other players listed above are what the Dolphins and Allen's agent should be looking at for the framework of their deal.......Since so many other teams agreed for 5, the Dolphins are in the wrong if they stick to 6 being their only offer.

The Phins are only hurting themselves at this point. Get the guy signed and in to camp, so he can be ready to start week 1.

I'm going to go ahead and answer the question in the thread title, and i guarantee that it's true, just don't ask about my source.........Yes, we are closer to seeing Jason Allen sign!!!

I agree 100%. It would be nice to have him locked up for 6 and I think our FO's reasoning for it is that he's going to be a great player and they want him locked into a rookie deal as long as possible. Like it or not, we don't have much leverage and we should definitely just get him in. 5 years is a lifetime in the NFL. There is no sense in keeping the guy in an extended holdout over something that will happen in 5 years, especially when there's a possiblity that he's going to be the QB of your secondary for this season.

Yes, to best serve the interests of the organization a 6 yr deal will be ideal. But, Allen's camp don't seem to want to budge on 5 yr deal. At this point just get the deal done so he does not miss anymore time.

The art of compromise; give and take. As posted on other threads the Dolphins can't come off as softies and let any agent talk down term length to satisfy the desires of first round rookies to be in the position in five years or less for a big pay day on their second contract. However, the organization can't come off as inordinately pig-headed and stubborn. That perception will hurt when we go shopping for impact FA vets. Enough is enough and get the man signed!

I agree

It's a done deal, we need to sign him to a 5 year deal and get him on the field, the stage has been set.

They should just give him a 5-year deal so we can a a starting safety this season and if he turns out to be a bust, there will be less money invested in him
