Now that Nick Saban is gone, I would love to hear what Don Capers opinion is of Jason Allen. Or even from guys like Taylor or Zach Thomas. I know he slowed his progress with the holdout, early injury and then never really had many opportunities early in the season. I think it is too early to write Jason Allen off and having more communicatoin with the organization may help in understanding his value and skills.

for a first round pick, he didnt do anything his first year. that is all i know about him. To me, I like my first round picks to bring excitment to the team, reggie bush etc. bring some youth, some fun with them. I also think it is necessary and imperative that they play their first year and play well. I dont want to mention the saints again, but look at them. without bush and colsten they are not playing right now in the playoffs. Even though Brees has done really well, take those two away and they are not in the playoffs still, or maybe even make the playoffs.

I saw Allen play 4 years at UT and I think he will be fine if they actually let him get on the field. He led UT in tackles in his junior season. And he was the best player on defense before he got hurt his senior season. He showed good versatility and athleticism while there by playing both safety and corner. He was the best player at both of those positions, and UT is rarely lacking in talented players. Give him some time after he actually sees some playing time before we write him off. I think he will be just fine, and could end up being a very good player.

too bad Colsten was never a first round pick......

I'd like to meet this Don Capers. Maybe he hangs around with Can Caneron.

I think the question is a good one. Will Jason Allen continue to (if I have this right) play the star role, or is that a creation of Saban that will be gone next year? If so, will Allen be a corner or a safety? There is a lot of potential intrigue here.

Problem is, not all first rounders do well in their first year. Every rookie derserves at least three years before they are truly judged. There are a lot of 1st rounders that look like the next coming of (insert name of perenial Pro-Bowler of that player's position here) only to turn into (insert name of bust of that player's position) and vice versa.

This was Saban's biggest problem, he didn't play the younger players enough. The only player Saban drafted that has received regular playing time is Channing Crowder.

Ronnie Brown has played 28 games since 2005 with onlly 448 attempts, that's an average of just 16 carries per game.

how many years did Ryan Leaf get? hahahaha Ryan Leaf, man, imagine waking up knowing you were the most notable NFL bust since the NFL drafted college players, that would suck!

Ronnie, Crowder, Roth, and Daniels was a starter last year and played this year pretty much whenever healthy.

I mentioned Crowder as the only full time starter.

Ronnie Brown has averaged only 16 carries per game since he was drafted (this as the 2nd overall pick). Daniels started most of his rookie year but was pretty much a nickle cornerback in 2006. Roth (2nd round pick) is yet another part time player....

I think Jason Allens only hope lay in a simpler defensive system. Saban's schemes were too difficult for the kid, he obviously thrives off of his instincts and Saban's schemes eliminated much of the instinctive play of our secondary. It will be interesting to see if Capers simplifies things a bit next season.

JA will be fine, Satan just didn't have the cajones to start the kid once he knew we were out of the playoffs which is what any SMART HC would have done.

You got to be kidding me? Ok first off..rookies that have a HUGE immediate impact like Bush and V. Young don't come along too often, so I don't think it's quite fair to write J. Allen off just yet or say that he lacks excitement. He rode the bench for most of the season. And on top of that...look at guys like Peyton Manning...Manning wasn't that good at all his first 4 years...the same can be said for Troy Polamalu. Jason Allen will be fine. Not all rookies make an impact as soon as others, but alot of them still make an impact
