I saw Jason Taylor on the NFLN this morning talking about the disadvantage of defensive players when it comes to penalties from sacking a QB. This has been made an issue as of late by some players in the NFL in that there were some plays where the defensive player allowed the QB slide out of grasp in order to avoid being penalized.

Mike Pereira, NFL Director of Officiating, had a rebuttle statement basically saying that the rules are made for a reason and that the NFL has no plans to restructure the rule book.

Is this a legitimate concern by the players, or is this much ado about nothing?

Your thoughts.....

The rules are fine, I think they just need to issue some guidelines, sort of like how the IRS has the code, and then issue Regs explaining them. They need to do a better job with regs and enforcement.

The way it's setup you're not allowed to touch a qb in the helmet right? Well kinda like in baseball a guy leaning in to get struck can't a qb on occasion lower or lunge his head at a defender's hand causing contact? Basically do a Vlade Divac flop?

IMO they need to realize that QB's are men AND football players or just make them where red jersies and make them off limits. It's too much of a gray area now.

I qb could lean forward to force a penalty but he's putting himself at risk for an injury. That's why the rules were put in place.

The rules are fine, there's just no consistency in the calls.

I cant stand Pierera or listening to the way he always has excuses for bad calls. All these calls are definately ruining the game in not only mine but a vast amount of others opinions.

If you go and sack a quarterback, you can't drive him into the ground. This "driving" is determined if, at the end of the sack, the player rolls his body off him immediately. This is not a "drive" and is now the only acceptable mean of sacking the QB. Now, while thinking about not only how to get to the quarterback, then sacking the quarterback, they now have to think about how to take him down lightly and roll to the side after the sack...This is a pathetic demonstration of how to protect a quarterback. I say, if the QB doesnt want to get hit, then don't let him play...Just imagine what tis sport is going to be like 10 years from now with all these prissy rules...

Now DE are scared to touch the QB...Just like the DE in the Giants game when he wrapped up Vince Young and then just let him go...Prime example

Remember in the 60 and 70's when players didnt have teeth...They didnt B**tch and whine...God I hope these morons in rule making and officiating don't ruin our beloved game

I thought there is a rule that says when the QB is in the grasp the ref blows the whistle and play is dead. Now on one of those two plays I saw the ref about to blow his whistle then he stopped. Now that is bs. Just thank god it was not against us. I would be :fire: :tantrum: all week long.

The rules are ridiculous, it is based all around money invested in quarterbacks not the fact that they actually care what happens to the quarterback. The whole thing is the nfl cant market a high profile injured quarterback. The are players just like everyone else on the team and the rules should be the same. We should just put some skirts on them, then everyone would get the point.

Sacking = Tackling...Its just a different name because of the position...Now what the h*ll kind of a game is football without tackling

Put them in skirts and give em flags to wear...

it really is getting rediculous. I mean, I am all in favor of protecting the QB, and if a guy tees off on a QB when he is clearly down or has released the ball with time for the defender to pull up or avoid him... then there should be a penalty. But it has gone WAAAAYYYYYY too far...

I think that for the questionable calls, like the guy accidentally hitting the qb if he cant stop quick enough, the penalty shouldn't be called. the penalty should only be called if the qb gets injured. Other than that, the qb should have to take just as much punishment as everyone else.

Absolutely. The rules are there to protect the qb. The rules regarding protecting the qb has been an evolving pattern since late '80s. Before this pattern qbs in that era were enduring a lot of potential career threatening injuries. As defensive blitzes became more complex and players became more stronger the need for the rules. Its referees who go overboad and call tacky calls. Case in point the MNF when the GB defensive player did nothing but touch the back of Hasselbeck's jersey on his name and MAY have barely glazed the very back of the helmet and got hit with 15 yard penalty.

in quarterback's defense

one thing u have to remember is the quarterback does take harder shots than pretty much anyone. he has no running momentum, is usually blind-sided, and has massive defensive lineman hitting him instead of dbacks.

I totally agree. Unfortunately, they are obligated to follow the rules. I have personally not seen the actual rule book, but I have the feeling that it is very specific in that IF a defensive player comes in contact with ANY part of the QB not deemed "available" as per the rules, that player gets a penalty. There is no room for judgement. I do not like it, but I think the NFL is doing this to cover their butts because some of the hits could be left open for suggestion if the rules were otherwise stated. It is not like baseball where the umps are the final say in "bang bang" plays at first base. That's why the NFL has instant replay. With that, there is a an issue that needs to be resolved concerning this this upcoming offseason.

They are ruining the game with these stupid rules...it is aggravating. I can understand wanting to protect the QB but now you cant even tackle them legitimately without having to worry about getting flagged for 15 yards it's ridiculous. When you have players on the field afraid to sack a QB you have a serious problem!
