I have NEVER seen/heard the position of "Open End" used before--in Miami or any other team.

1. Does anyone know of another player classified as an Open End???

2. Or has Saban just created a "new" position never before used quite like this in the NFL?

D@mn, I'm liking Saban more and more........

My girlfriend plays Open-End with me about 3-4 times a week.:cooldude:

I think it is just a name for a hybrid DE/DT player. I imagine the "open" comes form the fact that he may line up at a traditional DE spot or he may shift and line up as a LB, DT, or whatever. Basically, it is "open-ended" which means his options are plenty.

No offense but that other guys' response about he and his girlfriend was so much better.

I think you mean a hybrid DE/OLB player.....JT's not big enough for DE/DT.

Are other hybrid DE/OLB players called "Open Ends"?

This is the first I've heard of that position, but this definatly comes from this 3-4/4-3 mix defense. There are times when JT is playing back with the LB's. Since I havn't seen practice I dont know, but is JT mostly in a 3 point stance or does he go from the 2 point sometimes? When there in the regular 4-3 do they have Zgonina lined up over the Center, in either A gap or is he head up on the guard? There are so many alignments you can do with the way this defense sounds with so many different blitz packages. Is the Will(seau) playing on JT's side or are they rotating him over away from the TE? If he's always playing on JT's side the zone blitz posibilites are going to be sick.

EDIT: NVM on the Junior question because I guess he really hasn't practiced in this scheme yet.

im thinking 'open end' is the weak side DE, split out further from the defensive tackle than the ss DE is, just a guess but it seems plausible as this would make contain on the weak side some easier.

Seriously though..

I'm excited about this defense and the different looks they're going to show on a week to week basis. And we're not going to see much of it until the season starts. We'll see some during the pre-season but not much.

Open End. I guess he means JT is "open". He can move around freely? He's not locked into one position.

I'll guess his girlfriend had a tight end, but now it's an open end?

Or is it a split end?
