Jay Ajayi is no fluke

Yes, Jay Ajayi May Be This Good (The Ringer)

Declaring somebody in the NFL a “breakout star” often becomes a dangerous exercise in myopia. After notching his second straight 200-yard rushing game on Sunday, is Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi more Miles Austin or Bryce Brown? After three unspectacular seasons, Austin came out of nowhere in Week 5 of 2009 with 10 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns. It was no flash in the pan: Austin finished the year with 81 catches for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns, and he eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in 2010, too. Meanwhile, Brown burst onto the scene when he rushed for 347 yards and four touchdowns in a two-week span for the Eagles in 2012, but he surpassed the 100-yard mark only once more in his career.
So, has Ajayi suddenly turned into Eric Dickerson, or will he soon fade back into obscurity?

Ajayi followed up a forgettable 2015 rookie season (3.8 yards per rush on 49 carries) with an uninspiring preseason to start his sophomore year. He averaged just 2.7 yards per carry over four games and lost a fumble in Miami’s final exhibition. There weren’t many hints of the quick-footed, versatile power back from Boise State whose draft stock fell mostly due to concerns about the long-term health of his knee. Instead, Ajayi, who had spent most of the offseason as Miami’s presumptive starter — seemingly by default after Lamar Miller left for Houston in free agency — lost his job to July signing Arian Foster.
Ajayi reportedly sulked so much about the demotion that head coach Adam Gase left him in Florida when the Dolphins flew to Seattle to play the Seahawks in Week 1. But a Foster groin injury the following week forced Ajayi back into an expanded role by Week 5, and he’s run away with the Dolphins’ starting running back job since. He’s rushed for 418 yards and three touchdowns in his past two games — becoming just the fourth player in NFL history to rush for 200-plus yards in back-to-back games — after gaining just 304 yards and three scores in his first 13 pro appearances. We’ll probably never know the exact moment that the light went on for Ajayi, but he looks like a completely different player than the tentative, ineffective runner we saw during his rookie year and again this preseason.

I will admit during the preseason i expressed my concerns with Ajayi to other dolphins fans not on this forum. I thought he danced around too much in the backfield and was slow in making decisions, however after these past 2 weeks I like many other have been astounded by his quick decision making and quickness to hit the holes. Not seeing anything from his Boise State days I based everything I have seen off of watching dolphin games, and have seen a huge improvement. Do I think he can rush for 200 yards every game? No, but I do think if given the carries he could hover in the 100-120 yard range most games. I think the dolphins come out passing against the jets who are going to be watching these last 2 games with ambitions to stop the run. I think Ajayi will have a good second half and hopefully carry us to more victories over the course of this season.

Interesting, I had a different take. In his limited tries with a pussified line he made a few exceptional runs. When he was benched I thought it must be all attitude which was alarming. In college and the few runs as a pro I thought he is built a bit and runs hard like Beastmode and Ricky but of course it's way to early to put him in that company but he is a tough sob. Anyone see that filthy stiff arm on that one run, almost ripped the defenders helmet off from under the chin...thing of beauty ala Ricky.

Old school here.. that stiff arm was reminiscent of Csonka.

Glad you came around. I think he has or will change a lot of doubters' minds. The kid has a lot of natural talent.

It will likely still be an uphill battle for him to get his 2nd contract if the scouts concerns about the bone on bone thing are valid.

Well in the preseason he had 18 attempts for 49 yards. Nothing I would write home about, however that line with Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner was horrendous

I was pretty critical of him as well as he seemed very spastic and would just run into whatever, whenever. I was actually disappointed as I saw him in the Bowl Game against Arizona where he ran for 134 yards and a 6.1 average. He would be hit at the line and still get 5 yards! I think he has finally let the game come to him a bit and he is seeing holes now (especially with the starters on the o-line). He has always ran with power, now it just isn't up one of our linemen's butts! I will gladly be wrong if it turns out like this!

Go back to the draft, I said then he was going to be the steal of that draft in the 5th round. Looks like that is happening.

I missed the game on Sunday, but I just watched the highlights of his runs. All I can say is "wow". The kids confidence and body language is off the charts. He looks like he owns the field. Even when he gets up it's like, "Ok, give me more.....you can't stop me."

I did not expect this from Jay at all....what a change.

With our line playing better and his attitude and health, the sky is the limit for him.

He's finally making the games watchable again.

Key right there. We had become so unwatchable it was sickening. Now we look like an NFL team. Let's hope this carries forward!

We have a running game, you will make the payoffs with a solid running game plain and simple. It eases the physical burden on all other players, wrs not running, d resting on sidelines, more time for coaches to analyze schemas, qb mismatches easier to see, etc... if you can run like this you will win and win big...
