DAVIE — Miami Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi may not have an endorsement deal in his native England yet, but his popularity among fans who use Twitter has skyrocketed in the past two weeks.
According to an unscientific poll conducted by The Daily Dolphin this week, Ajayi is currently the second-most popular Dolphins, surging ahead of Cameron Wake, a Dolphins icon.
Wide receiver Jarvis Landry is still the most popular Dolphin, garnering 45 percent of the vote.
Ajayi earned 24 percent of the 1,507 votes. Wake earned 21 percent. And quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who Dolphins fans still don’t seem sold on as a franchise quarterback, earned 10 percent.
Ajayi has been named AFC offensive player of the week in each of the past two weeks. Ajayi has rushed for 418 yards in Miami’s last two games and is on pace for 1,336 yards, which would be the third-greatest rushing season in the history of the Dolphins, behind Ricky Williams in 2002 and 2003.
Only 27 players in the history of the NFL have ever rushed for 200 yards twice in a career. And Ajayi did in in consecutive games.
Ajayi is the only player since at least 1970 to rush for 200 yards in two of his first three career starts. Hence, the sudden surge in popularity.
