As much as he intrigues me my belief is that the Fins need to draft smart and smart .ransom healthy players...no more risky players. Agree?

The risk is more along the lines of "if" he will play not when. Based on reports Smith is 95% out for all of 2016. 7th round for Miami if he is still there, we don't have the luxury of picking up a medical long shot we have enough of those right now on the roster.

Not worth a pick IMO. Jack...yes. Not Smith and his never damage.

Report just came out he won't play at all in 2016, which makes him a shoe in for us to draft him

He was rated in the top 4 players in the Draft in terms of pure talent. I would seek the expert medical advice and I know I'm in the minority, but if they expected a full recovery after a year off, I'd be prepared to use a 3rd round pick on Jaylon Smith. The concept of delayed gratification sometimes works. If the medicos really don't like his prospects long term, then I'd look elsewhere.

This is the same medical staff that OK'd KA, Maxwell, and Bushrod. Anyone who disliked any of those due to injury, won't put much faith in Miami's evaluation.

He's my favorite player of the draft. But I wouldn't draft him before day 3. FOR US. We can't afford to take a gamble like that. Good teams that have not as many holes/needs absolutely can take the risk of an earlier pick. Hoops mentioned a 3rd rd comp pick from a team, and that makes sense to me. Maybe 4th. I doubt he goes undrafted though

I would take a shot at him.but some reports are saying he'll go high possibly Rd 1...I would go with a later pick but that's all.

Not to mention Dante Culpepper ugh

Drafting smart is taking advantage of talent when it becomes available.

We need help at virtually every position on our defense. And, like all teams, the biggest need for our franchise is play makers. If teams feel confident that Smith can recover(and im not too sure about that) then we have to grab him as he falls down the draft. Who cares about his rookie season if hes a star for the next 12?

I would definitely use a late pick on him if he is expected to recover for next year. Late round picks are a gamble and this one would be boom or bust.

The problem isn't getting good talent. The problem(s) are correctly evaluating talent, evaluating risk, and comparing those to every other prospect. Quite difficult. Does any team want to wait one year for a maybe-as-good-as-before prospect or would they rank him behind a not-quite-as-good but available no prospect? each team makes it's own decision. Someone has said a team with few holes can risk a 3rd. I agree. For everyone else, the analysis becomes more problematic.
Certainly, no one who has complained about signing some of Miami's injured FAs or drafting Parker/Jordan can now argue in favor of an injured Smith as if there is no risk. For me, I'd draft him but 5th or below. I doubt he lasts that long.

For a team willing to gamble, it's going to have to be a day 2 pick I think. If we are comfortable with his recovery then I have no problem with it. Could care less if he misses the first season if he might return to form after. Certainly a gamble, as we likely don't know enough before draft day.

That's the problem the way I view it-there is not enough clarity-posted someplace that the DOC who comments on NFL injuries said with nerve damage it takes a long time and he may never really recover from it.

It would be basically just a gamble if we do decide to pick him.

Before his injury, I had Smith as the 3rd LB in the class. Never saw a top-10 pick. Moot point if he never plays again, but if you project him to play in 2017, a 6th or 7th would fit the risk/reward. If it's up in the air completely, UDFA.
