I was an advocate of Jeff Ireland's.

I thought he could only be fairly judged on what he has done since Parcells left.

Solid draft and acquiring Moore & Burnett over trading away picks for less talent........but, I have a massive complaint regarding him controlling the whole roster.

Sparano used to get slaughtered for the constant turnover of what seemed to be endless TE's, OL, WR, ILB & CB's who never seemed to get any where near playing let alone even special teams.

The back end of our roster has been a complete nightmare every year. I naively assumed that the HC would control who he cuts to make his final 53, but now it seems that Ireland is all conquering.

I for one am not happy with this as I feel this should be a HC's decision. I did not want Jeff Fisher, but it seems this played a major factor in him not signing with Miami.

Ireland should deal with draft and negotiating trades & FA, but the roster cuts should be a HC decision!

What high profile HC would work under this agreement?

Pretty sure most GMs in this league handle player cuts, this is not something unique to Ireland.

This is something I have been wondering. It sounded as if Fisher wanted final say or part in the final say of personal, yet Ross along with Jeff Ireland would not allow it. It would seem to me that the head coach would or should have a big say in the players they want to draft, sign, cut, etc.

Am I wrong in thinking that many coaches still have a big hand in picking the players of his choosing, when in fact they do not?

Oh they most definitely do. They definitely have a big say in players they want to cut, and I bet they're in more of an advisory role when it comes to signing players. Drafting is another topic altogether. They probably have no say in putting together the draft boards, but they sit in on the interview process, and go to combines/senior bowls, and stuff like that.

Marc Colombo agrees with this statement.

I think the head coach had a say, but I believe the ultimate decision lies with the General Manager. If it was the coach's job, there would he no GMs in the league. For example, I think Mike Smith relays his thoughts to the Falcons GM, but ultimately Smith doesn't make the final call.

It Zimmer gets the job, I bet he will say to Ireland that he feels player X should be kept and player Y should be released, and I think Ireland would make the move based on the coach's input. Fisher wanted to be able to go to Ireland, and flat out say you will cut player Y. Honestly the way Ross wants to structure the front office is more of a team effort and healthy working environment.

I remember a certain someone around here saying "if they want me to cook the dinner, they should at least let me shop for the groceries"

Bob Kraft! Oh wait.....im sorry, im completely stumped. I mean, it wasn't Bill Parcells fault for uttering those words because clearly he didnt have "full control" over his vocal cords. We should only judge him for what he said after he had full control of everything.

The way it should be structured in my mind.........GM deals with draft & FA.

Finalising 53 man roster - co-ord says to HC, keep/cut, HC says to GM keep/cut, GM keeps/cut.

well, I highly doubt anybody cut a player that Shula didn't want cut. If Ireland is making the cuts all on his own then we're never gonna fix this thing. How can a coach be at his best coaching players he doesn't want?

Ozzy rules!!

Let's clear up another myth that is being spun recklessly out of control here.

"It wasn't about an organizational structure from the feeling I had,'' Ross said. "There was a partnership (between Fisher and General Manager Jeff Ireland) and that was fine with both of them. Having seen some things written (about Fisher wanting control), that wasn't our case.

"The first meeting, we talked about that. He was fine with the arrangement."

That is the case with most teams who either don't have the all powerful head coach or the powerful GM that has control over hiring and firing the head coach. The head coach and general manager collaborate on the personnel decisions. You rarely see a GM make a move without getting the head coach's input on the move.

This is not going to be a situation where Jeff Ireland goes out, scouts players, and doesn't let the head coach in on it. He's obviously got to get players that fit whatever philosophy the new head coach will bring. Now, if he and the head coach disagree, he does have the power to make the final decision. That is how it should be. No more of this tie breaker stuff where the two parties go to the owner or the "football czar".

The GM has to have final say, the coach almost always has a strong input in the moves. The GM is the link between the buisness end and the team, he has to protect the best interests in the owner while managing the team. Otherwise you get what happen in Minnesota, trade a 3rd for R.Moss and cut him what seemed like the next day!

Or you get Hue Jackson trading two first round draft picks for Carson Palmer.

Carl Petersen is your new GM and Ireland is his right hand - is this that hard to see????????????????? Petersen dosn't want the title GM but he has a his lackey in Jeff and for certain Fisher knew it , and when Fish went for absolute conriol of the roaster then Petersen had to stop Fish - Ireland is now Pertersen's pawn
