Jelani Jenkins sent this tweet on Sept. 15: "Bein ignored has to be up at the top of the list at my biggest pet peeves"
There's no danger of Jenkins being ignored any more.
The Dolphins' second-year weakside linebacker got the starting job because Dannell Ellerbe sustained a season-ending hip injury in the opener. And it didn't take Jenkins long to make his mark.
Jenkins is tied for the NFL lead in tackles with 35, which is more than double his total from last season (17). He also has 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
In other words, he's gone from a low-key rookie last year to a becoming a productive player for the team.
"I think last year you're just trying to make sure where you're supposed to be, don't get yelled at," Jenkins said. "But now that it's in the back of your mind, you're not thinking, You can play fast and just move around. I think that's what's showing on the field."
Jenkins, a 2013 fourth-round pick from Florida, has been so productive this season because he's always around the ball.
And that comes from having a high football intelligence.
In fact, there are two words you always hear associated with Jenkins. One is "intelligent." The other…
"He's a smart player," said middle linebacker Jason Trusnik. "I know he does a great job at studying not only his own craft and trying to make that better, but studying offense and knowing what they're doing.
"And not just a little bit. He knows it in and out, and he's learning each and every week."
