Joe Philbin mentioned Jelani Jenkins as a player who has made progress this year. He's a bit undersized but I know that he's smart and gives good effort and nobody's perfect. What LB role has he been playing in the scrimages? If Koa Misi isn't the answer as the mike linebacker, is Jelani a possible option? Which position is the best fit for him?
It seems like we have lots of options for the inside and outside roles but not the middle. I welcome your feedback.

Of all the positions on the team...our linebackers worries me the most...

Jenkins reminds me a little bit of Michael Barrow. Not a huge dude but always in the right place.

I honestly didn't notice him last year in games save for maybe a couple, but I heard he has good instincts and pass coverage IIRC. So at least he may be brought in at ILB (MLB) for passing downs unless they think Misi can get that done. Backup who is not a menacing pass rusher but pretty good at everything else if he doesn't take third downs. I'm a little vague here and somebody else will probably know more about him than I do but since you are asking, I think that's his situation

he started to take reps from Wheeler toward the end of last year. the more of that the better, imo

Cant get off a block.. Saw him sniff out a few screens but ends up finding a blocker to take him

I think one of the if not the biggest plus about him coming out was he was very good in pass coverage. Maybe bring him in and slowly get rid of Wheeler....forever.

Very big money is guaranteed to Wheeler (and Ellerbe) this season. We are stuck with him - the only question is whether he's a starter or a ridiculously expensive backup. He goes down as one of the nails in Jeff Ireland's coffin (so he's not all bad). However, presumably he knows he's playing for his career and maybe he can produce the good form of 2 years ago when he played for Oakland. I will be very interested to see how he plays.

with as much **** being said about wheeler and ellerbe this offseason, i'm really excited to see how they come out the gates as well. Ellerbe IMO was one of the top 3 MVP's of the Superbowl, sideline to sideline and loads of pressure all game and. We need both to play more downhill and the Delmas signing i think is a big help to that. Now we can blitz both and still have an enforcer around the middle for quick passes.

Yes with the move of Misi inside and Ellerbe out, it looks like they want to take advantage of his athleticism and let him rush, without have ing to think as much. He took poor angles a lot too despite his speed, so I'm not sure whether playing outside helps cover that a bit.
So assuming OV is at LB, you have Misi inside at the moment, Ellerbe outside, maybe Wheeler is already on the bench?? Haven't heard his name in OTA's. Any idea about that anyone?

Bright kid that can cover well. I think you allow him to compete

Why would you assume Vernon is at LB???

ideally nickle wolb...his best asset is his coverage skills...philbin said he's playing faster and more instinctual this year...that will be something to look for come camp and preseason...cause there wasn't any real instincts to his game in 2013...all primary assignment stuff...

this teams playing musical chairs with the lbs probably just trying to get some tape of guys at every slot and see how they look...i'd expect come camp the movement to slow down considerably...there's no way this team can get by with trusnick as the 2nd option at mike backer...no damn way

trusnicks a strong side 2 down olb at best...and when he plays for you it's ugly how easy he is to expose...jenkins i think should be part of the sub package at least this year...maybe you replace ellerbe or wheeler with him in the nickle...there's some kevin burnett to his game burnett when he came out was pretty much all coverage backer he had to learn to play a solid every down lb more a package specialist jenkins could be on that same kind of path i guess...although i think burnett showed better feel for the position from the get go and not so much pure athlete as jenkins did in 2013...

one thing about jenkins is he's assignment sound in the passing game so i think miami feels like they can trust him there...but his run game defense was all athlete in the preseason last year...looked like a chicken running around with his head cut off...would have been an easy exposure had he played more in our base d etc

Athletic kid who was a 5 star recruit and in much demand nationally entering college.

I think they have always viewed him as a developmental player as an OLB.
