From ESPN Insider...

Franchise tag for Abraham?
<Feb. 7> It appears the Jets will slap the franchise tag on Abraham for a second consecutive season, The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting. Jets GM Terry Bradway said last August that the team would sign Abraham to a long-term deal if the player was healthy and productive in 2005, but so far there have been no talks. Abraham played in nearly 85 percent of the defensive snaps last season. He had 70 tackles, 10½ sacks, six forced fumbles (all on quarterback strips) and one fumble recovery. The franchise tender for a defensive end will be $8.3 million in 2006. The amount is determined by the average salary of the five highest-paid players at the position.
If the Jets do decide to franchise Abraham, they might look to trade him. One possibility, according to The Star-Ledger, could be a deal with San Diego for quarterback Philip Rivers. New Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was Rivers' quarterback coach the last two seasons.

No surprise. I just get the feeling someone is going to offer a 1st-rounder for him...Maybe Denver since they have 2, maybe Parcells or Edwards since they would like a player of his caliber...Interesting to see what they will do.

Why would San Diego want Abraham? In the 3-4 he would play OLB and they already have Foley and Merriman there. That trade makes no sense.

I agree, but to me it's jyst one of those rumors. Now a player like Abraham would help most defenses in the league. Possibly they're considering moving someone inside, maybe Foley since Godfrey is on his last legs...Just speculation but unlikely.

My guess is KC or Denver would make the biggest push for Abraham...Denver has that extra 1st rounder from Washington, so they can do it, although that's only half the battle...Giving him 17-20 million in signing bonus money is the other major obstacle.

Could you all imagine seeing Abraham being the blitzing Lb in Saban's defense?

I doubt it would happen because we would have to give alot, but it would be nice.

Another reason we would never get him is because we would have to OVERPAY to get the Jet's to trade him into the same division.
