Jim Mandich's take: 'The Dolphins' passing game concerns me'

The Miami Dolphins are 3-0 in the preseason, but it doesn't feel like it.

I mean the questions and concerns coming into the season are still there. The passing game concerns me. Is the passing game reliable?

It is 3rd-and-9 -- are you confident that you are going to convert?

I did see two powerful throws from Chad Pennington against Tampa -- one to Brian Hartline and the touchdown to Anthony Fasano. However I have not seen the 3rd-and-10, drop-back, read-it, plant-that-back-foot, read-the-coverage and hit-his-man throw.

Also I have not seen them go vertical on a designed play.

Ted Ginn Jr. is solid on one side, but Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, and Brian Hartline all could start opposite Ginn on opening day. All three will play against New Orleans.

In the defensive backfield, you are relying on a free agent in Gibril Wilson and two rookies in Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. Against Tampa Bay with Byron Leftwich, Maurice Stovall and a bunch of stiffs there were openings everywhere.

They have one game to tighten that up before it's for real.

its because our secondary has no experience working together. Bell and allen are the only returning starter. you have wilson who was on oakland and you got two rookies. communication definitely needs work
 
If the passing game can't cut it, then we're in big trouble because the running game has not shown much at all this preseason.
 
and im very confident in the passing game you have pennington who is very accurate and consistent he wont give you a 300 yard game but 200 to 250 consistently
 
we had like the 4th ranked passing offense last season, why would it get any worse this year, when we have upgraded the recivers? this makes no sense to me either.
 
It makes sense to me. Pennington hasn't looked like the pennington from last year so far in the preseason. I don't think you can read into the preseason very much, but the article makes sense. If the first team offense has been lighting it up, then maybe im not watching the same games.

Still, I say wait until the first game to see how things go. I'm sure they will be fine.

Your argument makes as much sense as Mandich's.

How many picks has Pennington thrown this preseason? Why do you think we've been winning these meaningless preseason games? The same way we beat all those teams last year. Mistake free football
 
We are who we are, we are not the team that will light up the scoreboard. But at the same time we find ways to win games. I dont care if we win a game 3-0 or 30-0 a win is a win. I agree that I am worried about our secondary, but no more than I was worried about it last year. If anything I think we have gotten better and with a few games the communication will be there.

Who was talking about picks? I'm talking about the throws Penny usually makes, he hasnt been making this preseason. And its not just Penny, one thing that sticks out in my mind is Bess dropping an easy ball that he always catches.

The article talks about being able to convert on 3rd and long. Have we been converting 3rd downs regularly so far? We aren't like we did last year. Thats why we are squeaking by with low scores. How does that not make sense? No ones bashing players here, they simply just dont look as good in preseason as they did during the season last year. And im sure they will be fine when the season starts, im just saying the article makes sense.

dude, it's pre season. we have been shuffling the line up with different recievers. of course we are not going to be in mid season form. the passing game will be fine. i am more worried about the running game (run blocking).
 
I would think that our offense should score 20-24 points a game average. If our defense can stop the others teams, or hold them to field goals, we will be in every game.
We cannot afford turnovers. Turnovers will make or break us.

if we ever start run blocking like we hope to, there won't be to many of these

what % of 2nd down plays do we run the ball? its probably pretty high

if we can run between the tackles our 3rd down occurrences will go down and the average 3rd down to-go distance will be reduced

this is a fair statement.but you can do that against the weakest schedule.not the strongest teams in the nfl,and we play them all.against the teams we are going to play.we have to run the ball,and we wont with 8 in the box.ronnie doesnt stand a chance unless he is in the wildcat,and that just sucks.
