He says Russell going to Oakland is a no brainer.
He says Russell going to Oakland is a no brainer.
Well, then I don't think it's a no brainer.. JJ drafted great defensive players, but on the offensive side of the ball he got us some nice busts
Exactly. JJ set this offense back 10 yrs and we are still feeling it.
The Troy Aikman pick was a no brainer because he was the consensus number 1 and there were no other QB's (that I can recall) worthy of a top 5 pick.
Ummm, not quite. He tried to trade up to draft Edge and could get no partners. Yatil Green was supposed to be great but then kept popping his ACL, KAJ was the first 1000 yard back we had in how long?, he took a shot on a 1st rd talent but UDFA head case in Cecil, Moss was supposed to be gone by #5 - so he traded down to get more picks - who knew Moss would slide?
Oh yah, he also turned down two first round picks from Pitts burgh for Marino so as not to make the Phins faithful go on the war path for a great QB who was two years beyond done.
Plus you forget that when he got here, the knock on Miami was No Defense and No running game. Add to that the salary cap hell this team was in. You can thank your god Shula for all of that mess.
He fixed the defense in spades and got a decent running game and got us out of cap hell. I agree some of the offensive picks later on (Avery, Shannon) made you go WTF? But the man did a lot here - give credit where credit is due.
I guess D Johnson, Harper and Smith were also no brainers.:shakeno:Exactly. JJ set this offense back 10 yrs and we are still feeling it.
The Troy Aikman pick was a no brainer because he was the consensus number 1 and there were no other QB's (that I can recall) worthy of a top 5 pick.
Then explain that genius pick of James Johnson.
Jimmy was worthless as a coach in Miami.
"Because football's a simple game,'' Johnson said. "You don't have a quarterback, you don't have a chance. If you had a quarterback, there wouldn't be a decision to make. You'd just sit there and take Calvin Johnson. But that's not the position the Raiders are in. And from the looks of it, Russell's a better pick than Brady Quinn. It looks to me like Quinn's maxed out his ability, or close to it. Russell has a chance to be really, really good.''
Jimmy Johnson isn't perfect...then who is....but you have to give him he's due....he took over a losing team with a old QB...that wasn't the same player he was when he came into the NFL...Lets remember that most players...regardless of position would have left football after the injury that Marino had...but Marino played on...and thats something you won't hear or read in any paper. If there's anything Jimmy Johnson knows....Jimmy knows talent when he see it...the problem he had with the Dolphins is he didn't have the picks that the Cowboys had...yet he drafted Jason Taylor...Zack Thomas...with 3rd and 5th round picks...he dumped older players because he had to because of the cap....just like Cam's doing now.
I agree with Jimmy...and have said that the reason why I don't like Quinn as much as Russell...is that Quinn after two years with Weiss...could be maxed out...he has reached his top game...but Russell is just starting....no wonder why after staying and working with Peyton Manning his off season in 2006 at Peyton Mannings passing camp...Russell came back as a better QB...he stats prove that out in a big way. So is Jimmy right? Only time will tell...and I believe we as Football fans will be amazed at both their careers.
No, no one is perfect, and Jimmy is more than his share of not perfect.
His last couple of drafts (98' & 99')in Miami were the beginning (building blocks)of the downward spiral thats lead to a couple of awful seasons in 2004 & 2006.
And its funny listening to Jimmy Snake Oil talk about drafting quarterbacks when he neglected to spend any worthwhile picks on a QB in four drafts here.
