Joe Philbin gets first look at Miami Dolphins players next week

I actually think this is an area where we should see a lot of progress. IMO, this was Sparano's biggest weakness. He didn't seem to ever make any of the players better; in fact, most regressed under his watch. Jake Long is the prime example - his sacks allowed have gone up each year he's been here, under our supposed O-line expert HC.

It will be refreshing if we actually see players get better after joining the team! It certainly looks like our new HC knows how to 1.) build a team (through the draft), 2.) develop players and maximize their talents and success, and 3.) create a positive culture of teamwork and unselfish play. Let's hope it translates onto the field, but I'm pretty happy so far with everything he's saying and doing.

islandah, I think injuries are the main reason Long didn't play as well this past season as he did in 2010.

That said, Sparano was very poor at helping his players get better.

Actually, Long regressed each year under Sparanobefore this year .
2008 sacks allowed - 2.5
2009 sacks allowed - 4
2010 sacks allowed - 6

His run blocking grades per PFF, have steadily decined as well.

Not knocking Long, and injuries have played a role. I'm just saying I never felt like Sparano or his staff ever got more out of our players than they had when they arrived, with the exception of Soliai (which may have been more a maturity thing than coaching).

Sacks allowed is a peculiar stat. The QB holding onto the ball or running onto a sack are not distinguishable when it comes to this stat.

Jake was a first team All-Pro in 2010, so that was obviously his best year in the league.

The first week they're only allowed to do strength and conditioning and probably classroom/playbook stuff. Then they start drills I believe. Season can't get here fast enough.

I think one of the most underappreciated aspects of new coaching staffs is this:

Everybody has film on the current roster players. Coaches know what these players CAN do. But what about things that maybe they have not shown they can do OR have the talent (but have not been asked) to do.

Philbin seems like a really bright guy. I'm anxious to see whether or not he finds new roles or hidden talents among the remaining Dolphin players. He's already talked about getting Reggie Bush more involved in the passing game (which is pretty much a no-brainer). However, it was noted he see's some hidden talent along the offensive line.

Anyone have any guesses on who might shine unexpectedly now that the coaches can approach this roster with a fresh slate?

Reggie Bush will have a better year with Philbin.
John Jerry may have matured like Solai and maybe he plays better at the OT position. Murtha may be hitting his stride too. I think this is the reason we are still interviewing Guards in FA to fill the RG spot.
I think Wallace may be the surprise WR. Physically he is a stud but inexperience.
Messam could do well in the WCO.

We need to draft a fast big athletic TE. QB also needs to be drafted that is more accurate then what we have now.

Pro bowl selection is not necessarily an indication of quality, as it is in some ways based on reputation and popularity, but I won't argue the Jake Long point any further - I'm really happy he's on our team!

My point as it pertains to this thread, is that I'm hopeful and cautiously optimistic that Philbin and his staff will coach up, improve and get more out of our players than Sparano did. And I think you and I agree on that...
