Philbin went on to say that all of the holdover players will be starting with a blank slate and that the entire team is starting from square one. Those phrases, as well as the broader perspective Philbin mentioned in the quote above, make it sound like the Dolphins are setting a low bar for themselves in terms of expectations for this season. It’s not a bad idea, although it would be a lot easier to pull off if they had totally cleaned house during the offseason.Even though Philbin had nothing to do with previous teams, Jeff Ireland’s continued presence in the general manager’s office makes it hard to separate this year’s results from what went down the last few seasons. i dont understand how this lowers expectations at all.

Well what Philbin says does make a lot of sense, and I don't think the phins should have to clean house in order to justify that statement. The reason I feel that way is because it's an entirely new system (on defense as well) that Philbin plans to implement. Blocking schemes are going to be different, the way the QB reads the field will be different, as well as the routes/combinations our receivers will be running. It will again be a different type of offense that they are running and we may see some players unexpectedly shine in it while others may not be as well suited and won't fit. So I'd say it's more of a "let's see who can do what in this system" in terms of a "clean slate".
 
Nice to see Philly recognizes Ireland's level of expertise, a " Blank Slate ". Just hope it doesn't take as long as Ross to realize that that Blank Slate is on a start & finished bases and that this is as good as it gets with the GM......not that he could do anything about it...( feel a little sorry for Philbin, for his hands are kinda tied)

Might take Philly time to get to where most of us are, to realize the " Treading Water " approach of Irelands strategy, and has not even been able to provide a quality of " DEPTH " in which he's been focusing on now for years....... bringing in low leveled & priced players but still keeping us on the edge of cap space....and continued replacement....

I know he's new so I'll give him a break for he really can't rock the boat at such an early stage and must give the organizational approach of hope, faith, and other abstract views to feed the fans and provide some form of positive hope in his own psyche.......Don't get me wrong here, Philly will have a much better running team (as in putting the best players and proper approach) than Sparano ever did...

Philly just doesn't realize at this point that we the fans have been fed this crap for to many years to continue sticking our heads in the sand and jumping for joy and feeling a scenes of security....or at least most of us..............

Good part is ....you'd think our GM can't stink all the time and so looking forward to that unexpected shot of luck and we actually find a starter who actually can start for more that 1 year and doesn't have to be our 1 pick or someone we break the bank for....
 
Marshall had a blank slate when Philbin was hired, but then he got in trouble (again).
 
wow some miami fans are IMPOSSIBLE. JESUS!

all the guy was saying was he doesn't know for sure who will start etc etc. I am POSITIVE he and the coordinators already have potential starters/roles penciled in, but what he is saying is once these guys hit the field and he sees how they work, they they fit the scheme etc. , anything can happen. "everyone is competing for a job" even though it is not entirely true.

how anyone could be mad at this or take it as a sign of rebuilding is beyond me? hell, even sparano tried to say this crap, its kind of cliche' but philbin means it to an extend - just everyone comes in and has to prove themselves to the new coach. thats all. they know they have some solid pieces, they just have to see it play out on the field in practice. calm down.
 
Not a dig on the OP.. more directed at the writer..... Why waste our time with this dribble.. I mean.. do you really think Philbin is gonna say anything different..

I will just be happy if players actually get coached and developed, and actually improve in play, rather than regressing like most did under Sparano.
