Joe Robbie

That was a fantastic piece of journalism, and an incredibly sad story. Truly the Robbie family has endured the greatest Dolphins curse-- it destroyed their family.

Dolphins fans under 40 should read this.
I've always known the story how Robbie became Dolphins owner and what he did to turn this team into one of the greatest franchises in the NFL. He had his faults, as the story says, but overall, he knew how to run a team. He got Shula and the next 25 years were special.
He got the stadium built without 1 cent of public money. Think about that.
His name should be on the stadium in some way, even if he shares it with a corporate sponsor.
I really hope the Dolphins honor Mr. Robbie and his family on Dec. 14 during the 50th season celebration.
Because if it wasn't for Mr. Robbie, NONE of us would be Dolphins fans.

Thanks Junc. Excellent read. Very sad the way things turned out for the family.

Joe Robbie did alot of great things but some of his attitudes basically tore apart our dynasty esp when it came to money.
His at times cheap ways sent three of our best players packing to the WFL

That is partially true. I saw a NFL Films show on Csonka, Kiick and Morris that discussed that. Basically, Shula told Csonka, Kiick and Warfield that before they accepted an offer, to call and tell him what the WFL offer was and the Dolphins would counter. The WFL told them if they left the room, the offer was off the table. The offers were crazy, no NFL team would come close, much less the Dolphins. The WFL wanted the big names.
That said, Robbie was frugal, but again, he didn't have deep pockets and it's not like the NFL was the money machine it is now. If he was that bad an owner, then why did he get Shula and pay him good money?

I dont think my statement implied he was a bad owner, just that he was tight with purse esp with players.
There were alot of issues with teams and money at that time. Teams basically had full say on money since there was no free agency.

I know, I just wanted to set the record straight on what happened, that even if Robbie wasn't cheap, it didn't matter.
