"The only quarterbacks in the NFL with a better passer rating at the moment than Ryan Tannehill are: Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan.

That’s it. Nobody else. Tannehill is sixth in the league in passer rating.

Do you think a team like the Giants, Jaguars or Bucs would like to have such a quarterback?

Since returning from a shoulder injury that caused so much pain it felt like he was being repeatedly stabbed, Tannehill has: eight touchdowns and one interception.

Do you think a team like the Bengals, Redskins or Broncos would enjoy such production?

In his last 16 starts, which the last time I checked comprises a typical NFL regular season, Tannehill is 12-4.

Do you think a team like the Raiders, Bengals or Lions would take on a quarterback with such a record?

Cut Tannehill after this season. Go ahead. My message is this: someone else will pay him."

I found this interesting. I understand the sentiment of cutting Tannehill, eating $13mm over the next two seasons, and trying to find a stopgap for the future. I get it. But outside of MAYBE Bridgewater? I can't think of anyone that makes sense, salary-cap wise.

But I looked a little harder at what's going on in the NFL right now:

I present to you...your top 10 salaried QBs for 2018.

Aaron Rodgers
Matt Ryan
Kirk Cousins
Jimmy Garropolo
Drew Brees
Andrew Luck
Alex Smith
Joe Flacco
Matthew Stafford
Derek Carr

You know how much they're making in 2018? $265mm, or an average of $26.5mm per year.

You know what that group's collective record is right now?

57-71-2

You know what Ryan Tannehill's salary cap number is next year? $26.6mm.

It's not as crazy as it might sound to keep him.

read a few things on bleacher report in regards to him. one article talking about where all the qbs should go in the offseason, didn't have RT winding up anywhere but had us taking on joe flacco and called it a lateral move. another I just read was "how to avoid pulling a Vikings and screwing up at QB", it was a joke article from the get go but had a few valid points, talking about the skins, broncos, Vikings off season acquisitions and how they all had buyers remorse. Cousins broke his leg and now the redskins are left in a bind. you cant predict a damn shattered leg idget! I said in offseason discussions that if we parted ways with RT17 that Ross is all about the splashy move but I'd want to stay far far away from it, that and the 1 year wonder like the Keenums.

If we make the playoffs with RT having QB ratings 100+ while throwing for 225 and offense rushing for 150+ then its fine, well worth the money. I know that's a lot for a game manager, but in 2020 that contract will look like a steal if he stays healthy this and next year and maintains his current production. honor out the rest of his contract, get his eventual replacement in 2020 draft and be done with it. no dead money and we have a qb we can win with. 50% or more of fanbase is going to bitch about qb play regardless of who is back there, it may sound like im stuck in mediocrityville but I'd rather pay premium for a QB we know we can win with that pay premium for an unknown

paying a avg qb 26million a yr is dangerous. you are putting to much pressure on someone who will never live out to his Contract. for example Cousins. he put up good number but he is not winner. cousins need teams around him to win. so does thill17.thank to QB Allen and kicker for N.E and drake return for td. we could have lost both games. thill17 should come back next yr. I would still draft qb if one on board I like in rd 1 or 2 for future.

Name me one QB who doesn't need a team around him to win a championship.

One.

Things I learn on Finheaven: Within 6 posts Ryan Tannehill is described as elite, and a quarterback who could transform another team into the best team in the league.

Meanwhile the best way to forecast the future is to ignore today. Then once tomorrow arrives, ignore today again. It never fails to amaze me that people are so eager to change opinion based on short term recency.

When ESPN runs a weekly segment called, "Overreaction Monday," that might be a bit of a hint that they are mocking themselves, and acknowledging the faulty premise behind altering opinion sharply based on something that just happened.

Awesome post. That overall record is nuts.

I'm thinking blessed is too strong of a word in this situation. If this article was about Bob Griese, I could come to terms with it.
