This time of year is full of lovefests, and the stud of the week seems to be Joe Staley. Reading these boards, people are pontificating that he will be a first rounder, and even has an outside shot at being the dolphins pick at #9. Well the value there is debateable. While we need a LT, I am one of the many who are wary of picking nonBPA with a top ten pick. Surely someone will drop who is un-pass-up-able, right?

While they are totally different players with different strengths and weaknesses, this makes me think of Marcus McNeil from last year. I wanted him really really bad, but i was similarly wary of spending our first round pick on him. In hindsight, well of course we shouldve drafted him; hes a stalwart.

SO this does make me warm up to the idea of drafting Joe Staley when i otherwise wouldve scoffed, especially since "he might be better than Marcus because Marcus never even sniffed the top ten last year". of course, i would def choose marcus mcneil over joe staley, but that doesnt mean they cant both be great tackles.

so, the question i pose to you is will we look back a year from now with the same regret of passing up on marcus mcneil in regards to joe staley?

OH, come on who told you and where did you here Staley is close to the top 10?
A promising talent, yes but top ten?

i apologize.

i didnt realize that the "joe staley @#9" rumors and discussion were completely relegated to the VIP forums, but believe me that these discussions are in mid-dialogue and are halfway convincing.

I wanted McNeill really bad last year, got disappointed that we took Jason Allen, and McNeill's performance in his rookie season validated my views. I thought McNeill was the perfect Houck LT, big yet mobile. It was probably why he was so able to mesh with their current OL.

Staley's not exactly a Houck mold of LT but he's still a very good pass protector and less of a run-blocker. You just don't see that kind of mobility in a LT over 300lbs. I'd love to have him on our squad. He has a lot of upside.

i like staley alot but would rather trade down if we get him....im all about value man and at 9 he'd be a reach

I understand what you're going for with this thread, but what is with the poll? Maybe I'm just misinterpreting this but, we're basically choosing between a Pro Bowler who absolutely dominated his first year in the league, and a guy that is a tremendous talent...but has mainly competed against weak MAC teams his whole college career. If you were to pick one offensive lineman right now to build around for the next decade, I would be hard pressed to take anyone other than McNeil.

I am one of the people who actually support us taking Staley at nine, much better than Levi Brown IMO, and the situation is similar to last year with McNeil, but if I had to choose between the two one year from now, barring an injury it would have to be McNeil.

There's a very strong possibility that Staley is Miami's pick at 9.

Not really. He's pretty much rated in the 12-15 area right about now.

Would you take him over Levi Brown? I know he's more of a project but do you see him being better if he fulfills his potential?

Brown's workout numbers were awful and indicate that some teams wouldn't consider him at LT. I don't buy that. I've only seen Staley in one full game at CMU so it's a bit harder to judge.....I'm torn.

McNeil last year was projected a Top 15 pick last year until some doctors said he has narrowing of his spine. Alot of players play with it with no problems but it scared alot of teams away. Staley ran the 40 under 5.0 so he's shot up the boards. Measureables at the Combine shouldn't be a huge factor for offensive lineman. Remember Tony Mandarich.... Enough said....
Always look at the tape and judge...

Spinal Stenosis - most guys get this diagnosis and find a new job.

I stand corrected, and I apologize to Keith Jackson, didn't know about Staley being that high. Thanks for the info guys and BOOM. I must have been drunk and miserable due to AC Milan's collapse yesterday.
