The NFL Network reports NFL Draft prospect OL Joe Thomas (Wisconsin) did 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Cool let him not impress all the way down to the #9 pick :D

The bench press isnt a great indicator of strength anyway.

Not to mention the other tons of exercises/drills he'll go through that will make this seem silly.

Hell....I am impressed...lol. Thats 15 reps more than I can do.....:goof:

Levi Brown did 31, that isn't much more. I read Blaylock did 40, too bad he's a G at the next level.

you don't bench press guys in football its not a real good indicator of strength and he also ways like 20 pounds less then Levi and blaylock

You see what happens here at the combine? people start forgetting that they are football players and not weightlifters. Just like the wonderlic with young, :sidelol: People start getting stupid.

Not me. They are used to moving people around to get to the QB or to protect the QB. A lot different than laying on your back pushing up weight. It is a whole different concept between protecting a QB/Going after a QB and lifting weights on you back.

Don't read much into the bench. Years ago the Dolphins drafted a guard from Michigan (Scott "something") in the later rounds. His big claim to fame was benching 40+ reps at the combine. Unfortunately he had no wheels and ran a blistering 5.6 40. Needless to say he was preseason fodder.

No, you don't bench press guys in football but the movement and the pressing that is needed in the technique is extremely similar to that of a bench press, and bench press happens to be a good indicator of the amount of power a lineman can give when he gives a shot to the opponents chest. Granted, a lot of power comes from the legs and hips but upper body strength counts too.
