He likes his initial contact and then he stays within a inch of his man the rest of the play..., Harvey could get go seperation that game...

These videos are cherry picked collection of plays, but I will comment anyway.

* Except for one play, Jake Long maintained contact from beginning of the play to the end. That is dominant. The defensive player usually shed Joe Thomas after 1 to 2 seconds.
* Joe Thomas stoped on some plays where Jake gave consistent effort.
* Jake Long is clearly bigger than Joe Thomas.
* Jake Long was a dominant run blocker in his video. Joe Thomas barely won his battles in the running game.

I have no idea if the videos are a accurate representation of each players level of play, but Jake Long is clearly better than Joe Thomas in these videos. It is not even close.

besides that first play on the long video, long was dominant. harvey did use him on that first one though.

I just don't think we can justify spending the 1st overall pick on an OT that is believed to be a right tackle. I think we can find tackles in the 2nd round that will be just as good.

These video's can be decieving but Jake looks better between the two although that's not really saying much because of what I just said........ I did notice however that Joe Thomas just kind of standing and looking around when the play was still going on when either he lost his block, or the play was past him. Jake looked like he was fighting until the whistle.

Also II must say Jake Long's strength and initial "punch" is ver impressive. On at least one of those plays Jake was still in his backpeddle when Harvey got to him and Jake gave him the punch and you could see how it jolted Harvey back.

the thing is this isn't a highlight reel of Jake Long, this is one game against one of the premier defensive ends in college... in a bowl game no less...

that Joe Thomas clip wasn't very impressive though

funny how dissected guys get around this time. i remember last year people had issues with thomas' run blocking ability, his weak bench, etc. Some people had Levi Brown ahead of him because of this. I'd be very happy to have long.

Joe Thomas and it ain't close.

I do not believe that Joe Thomas was a better prospect. Joe Thomas is a pro bowl OT, and we will not know how Jake Long stacks up until he plays in the NFL. Having said that, I fail to see how you make the statement that Joe Thomas was a better prospect coming out of college. What do you base the statement on?

Many NFL execs believe Jake Long projects as a left tackle in the NFL. Why do you think he is a right tackle?

I base that on what I saw when I watched tape on both players when they came out. I feel Thomas was better in every category except frame. He showed better lateral movement. He showed better speed. He is more consistent technique. He showed better positional blocking skills. He did a better job getting to the second level and hitting the moving target. He handled the bull rush with better balance and composure.

For me, based on what I saw on tape when each came out, it would not be close.
