With the news Steelers LB coach Keith Butler is a candidate for the DC job, I have read many thoughts on what that might mean for Joey Porter.
So I began to wonder how bad/good has porter been for the dolphins?

I took the '09 sack leaders and eliminated DE's so out go Dwight Freeney and Jared Allen, I then broke down the top OLB'ers for '09 and ranked them based on '09 stats & the past 3 years.

'09
-----
E.Dumervil 17
L.Woodley 13.5
D.Ware 11
T.Banta-Cain 10
J.Harrison 10
J.Porter 9
C.Pace 8

'07-'09* going back three years as thats how long Porter has played for mia.
------
D.Ware 45
J.Harrison 34.5
E.Dumervil 34.5
J.Porter 32
L.Woodley 29
C.Pace 21.5
T.Banta-Cain 14

As for Porter I broke his career down in 3 year incriments and discovered that from '07-'09 he had the highest 3 year sack total of his career.
here are the 3 year breakdowns:

Year sack INT
'99-'00 12.5 1
'01-'03 23 4
'04-'06 24.5 6
'07-'09 32 2

Looking at these stats if anything one argument can be made that as a Pass rusher he has gotten better, but his playmaking has declined as he peeked with 10 INT's between '01-'06....I am not one that wants Porter out but certainly understand if he is released.

However I think its important to understand that in the 1 season Porter was allowed to play his position"WOLB" he had his best year for miami,in the other two season's operating next to Jason Taylor he struggled in fact in '07 he was playing "SOLB" in a 4-3! so I feel he has done as well as could be expected for an aging OLB and better than most in the league.

people were gonna knock porter if he didn't get 15 sacks a year... if a guy doesn't get a sack a game hes somehow too inconsistent and he sucks...

porter hasn't been the best OLB in the league for us, but hes been a pretty good player

I think we need to bring Porter and Taylor back for another season to temporarily eliminate a few of the holes we have on defense. Then we could focus on the d-line (NT) or just go out and grab McClain.

Yeah, but it would be nice if he could tackle, defend the pass, or had any range at the position.

Let's face it. The guy who was once a dominant defender is now just an above-average pass rusher.

Pretty good just does not cut it when you are being paid millions and millions right? With high money comes high expectations......produce highly or get out.

Yeah i remembered 2007 and how Joey and Jason did not compliment each other well. I don't think we're helping ourselves by lining them up together.

The sacks that Porter had this season fell into two categories

1) the ones where Randy Starks blew up the middle, flushed the quarterback out of the pocket to the left into the arms of Porter who hadn't moved an inch since the snap

2) the ones where Cam Wake blew around the right tackle, flushed the quarterback out of the pocket to the left into the arms of Porter who hadn't moved an inch since the snap

Porter is nothing more than a cheerleader these days. They should give him some pom poms and be done with it

I enjoy porters swag. He's funny as **** and really the only outspoken person for the fins in the media. However he sucked this year and minus wake and starks Help I made more plays then peezy. He's a great entertainer and a great motivator but that don't warrant 8 mil a year. Hope we can resign him for a cheap year or peaceeeee peezy.

they didn't all fall into those categories, and you have to realize EVERY player gets those sacks...

the problem is we just see every Porter snap so we can critique each one... but if Demarcus Ware gets 10 sacks like that, we have no idea because we dont see every Snap of his like we do of Porters...

i want porter gone, dont get me wrong, id like some young talent... but hes produced like he has his whole career here... the only thing that diminished is his coverage skills...

as for his salary, hes paid like a top 10 linebacker, and according to these stats, hes performed like a top 10 linebacker... hes not paid as the number 1 OLB in the league and he hasn't performed it either... but top 10, yes

Interesting you should mention Ware. "QB pressures" is maybe a better measure for pass rushers because they tend to be credited to the guy getting pressure rather than the "gimmes" that Porter takes credit for. Ware had 60 from 590 pass rushes (10.2%); Porter had just 11 from 354 pass rushes (3.1%). In fact pretty much every other weakside 3-4 OLB had at least double the production that Porter had - yet pass rushing is supposed to be his strength ???. All this despite the fact that Porter gets to play next to one of the best 3-4 defensive ends in the game

Porter was an impact player the first half of last season no question but since then he's been a liability. Maybe it's the injuries he's been carrying but that's a fact of life at his age. He's apparently due $1.2m this offseason - I'd be amazed if the Dolphins pay that instead of cutting him

This is a great post. Very informative.

Out of all the players on our defense to hate, I can't understand why people choose Joey Porter. Crowder's a bum, Gerbil's a scrub. Hate them.

Dude, thats the way 'every' pass rusher gets most their sacks. Harrison has Woodley and Hampton...and Woodley has Harrison and Hampton etc...

Why do you think Ray Lewis was asking to be traded back when he wanted Haloti Ngata to be drafted remember? Your point is baseless and empty.

When a player struggles they always use that excuse that they don't have help. You need the right scheme to be good. Porter is a good pass rusher. He is just not that powerful against the run and doesn't tackle/hit hard. Thats what's noticeable, not his sacks.
