Many people on here like the idea of Joey Porter moving to ILB. That would be a huge mistake. He is a great rushing OLB, exactly what he did best in Pittsburgh. We are not going to change him to a position again where he never played. We will keep him to the OLB position and watch him succeed just like he did in Pittsburgh. He knows how to get to the QB and ILB in a 3-4 scheme rarely rush the QB. He is one of the best OLB in a 3-4 scheme and he will play OLB next year. We should draft a ILB in this draft. I'd say around 3 or 4th round.

If we draft Chris Long with the number one pick, he won't play OLB, he will be a DE. He has enough size and skills to play DE in a 3-4 scheme. He would be great in a 3-4 DE scheme. Jason Taylor can't play DE in a 3-4 so he would move to an OLB and Roth (272; a little light) and Holliday (288) will replace JT on the D-line. Chris Long is 285 lbs and will play DE

I agree.
I also don't understand why people keep talking Porter to ILB and am hoping for Chris Long with the #1 pick!

Well, with the way that the team is currently constructed, Porter will be playing a bit out of position as the strongside OLB, that's part of the reason he struggled last year going up against the TE every game. The best fit for Porter is the weakside where he can rush the QB to his hearts content, but Jason Taylor currently has that spot so it's either leave him at strongside or move him inside where we have a glaring need.

If Long is our choice at #1, where does he play? He's too small to play a full game at DE in a 3/4, he would need to be moved to OLB and would be best on the strongside.

If JT is moved this offseason, then Porter would be able to move back to his natural position. Until then, he's playing out of position.

This is not too small to be a 3-4 end. He played the 3-4 defense in college. He is the Most versitile player at his position in the draft. He can play 3-4 DE/OLB and in the 4-3 3 technique DT, DE, OLB. I am hoping we don't trade down just so we can get him.

sometimes when an OLB has played the game for a good amount of time and has gained a knowledge like Porter has and the team becomes in need of a ILB it wouldn't neccesarily be unthinkable to make a move inside. Porter knows the 3-4 defense fairly well (i assume better than anybody now on the roster.) he could use his knowledge not only to hopefully be real solid inside but also help with the teachings of a c.long or v.gholston at OLB. I would not be against a move like that.

He could get away with playing DE in college because the players are smaller, but there is no way he's a DT in the NFL. His own college coach said that he would wear down playing DE in the NFL 3/4, I'm pretty sure that he knows what he's talking about. His coach (Al Groh) also has Parcells ear, so.....

DE's Seymour and Ty Warren for New England are both 305 lbs. on a light day.

Miami has small DE's for a 3-4 defense. Holliday is light, Roth is light and Chris Long would be considered light as well. Miami needs more DE's like Kevin Carter.

Everyone on this board focuses on statistics too much. The key for a DE in the 3-4 is the ability to stuff the OT on running plays and push the OT back into the pocket on passing plays. The ideal size and weight are set for individuals with average leverage and strength of players at the ideal size and weight. Chris Long is an example of an individual with less weight than the ideal that generates more leverage than the average player that has the ideal size and weight. He will excel as a 3-4 DE.

I agree that Chris Long can play very well at a 3-4 DE. And it is all about technique where you play on the football field. Fact is it is its not proven yet what one can do in the pros untill he gets out there.

Justin Tuck 275 6'5 about the same size as Chris Long, and was rewarded a nice salary for his versitality to play DE or DT in a 4-3 so if needed Chris could probably move into DT on passing situations or some other set if needed.

As for Porter lots of fans do not think he was good this year look at his stats he was very productive had a rocky start and excelled down the road. If you are pleading your case that he has the know how to play ILB you are right he probably does, but its a learning curve and he is much better at OLB so the Fins will be better off keeping him there.

Chirs Long will be a very good pics for the Dolphins looking at the Draft at this point in time.

I hope we draft Long with the 3rd pick. I think he knows how to play that position well and its very similar to the style he will be playing in the pros. He can stuff the run and He will be a rare DE in the 3/4 because he can really get after the QB. If anyone knows how this guy will fare in the NFL its Al Groh.

Parcell's defensive scheme has a long history of putting former OLB's/College DE's at ILB.

Look at Dallas. Akin Ayodele was a college DE who plays ILB for them. Bobby Carpenter also has ended up on the depth chart at ILB, despite being a traditional 3-4 style OLB.

In fact, in New England, virtually every ILB they have had during Belichick's career has been formerly a DE. In fact, besides Junior Seau and Ted Johnson, all of them have been.

Tedy Bruschi was a college DE.
Adalius Thomas was a college DE and former 3-4 OLB.
Monty Biesel was a college DE
Chad Brown was a former 3-4 OLB
Mike Vrabel was a college DE
Chris Slade was an OLB who ended his career at DE.
Bryan Cox started his career as a 3-4 OLB

In Parcell's version of the 3-4, there is typically a bigger, stronger ILB who attacks the line of scrimmage. That's what Joey Porter would end up playing.

Al Groh, Parcell's former linebacker coach, suggests he would be a best fit like Mike Vrabel, a 3-4 strongside OLB. There's really no greater authority we're going to hear on it here.

We'll see what Long weighs in at, but I'm doubtful it's much higher than 280, and that's not really going to do a whole hell of alot to effect his measurements in consideration for playing OLB.

In Parcells/Ireland I trust. I think they know what they're doing, and we'll have a solid 3-4 lineup by training camp.

I think you are overlooking two very important facts.

1. Parcells and Co. are the ones looking for prototypical players for the 3/4, they said that themselves. So yes, size does matter.

2. Long's own college coach has said that Long will tire out if he is a DE in an NFL 3/4. Maybe he could do it on a rotational basis, but most feel he will make the transition to OLB.

Joey Porter is a OLB and sometimes a DE thats it he cant play MLB for us
Porter was awful when used as a DE, he should never ever ever be used there again. As for playing on the inside, many people feel that he can and that he would be better suited there.
