I see a lot of disputes over Joey Porter and his play last year.
I just wanted to get a feel for what others felt.

I personally feel that Porter was the best player on defense last year. Followed by both the Allens.

I know G force is right in line with me.

What do others have to say?

I guess I'm suppose to sit this one out.:lol: You know how I voted anyway.:up:

w allen was better. consistently better than porter. with all the c long talks and the depth at DE and OLB - he is expendable for the right price. still would love to see him used right though - would like to see him stay but i won't cry if he goes. he is one of the few loud mouth players that i like b/c he is funny at least and doesn't seem to be totally selfish - hence coming on late last year when the season was virtually already over.

Joey Porter 2007 Defensive Stats

66 Total Tackles 57 Solo and 9 Assists
5.5 Sacks
2 Ints.

For someone who just underwent arthroscopic knee surgery . . . That's not too shabby.

I would like to state that my thoughts were from the Pitt game on . If you are asking for the season though I would have to go with Will Allen.

not bad. but do you know how much money he got paid to do that?

I think my vote falls between one of the best players on D last year and wasn't used correctly.

U cant deny the passion the guy plays with . . . that why I love the Dolphins . . . with Zach, JT and JP . . . these were 3 veterans that I just loved to watch on Sundays . . . even if we were 1-15.

I think JP has another GREAT year or 2 left . . . and if healthy, he will be a monster this year in his correct role.

Porter got a bad rap early on. He got a mega deal with $20 million guaranteed and less then a week later, got into the Vegas fight. Not a good start. Then you throw in the knee surgery during the preseason, and the fact that that slowed him for the first couple of games, it is easy to see why people jumped on him as a waste. Though as the season progressed, and he fully recovered from his surgery, he proved his worth.

I still think Porter is a solid player, and will be a major factor for this upcoming year's defense.

Overpaid.

I would agree with you that for the money he recieved that his states don't reflect his pay.
BUT
consider
1. He did not practice or play in Preseason
2. he had to learn a new position on the fly becasue he missed training camp (remember porter came from Pitt that has NEVER played a 4-3 defense)
3. He was coming of knee injury
4. on passing downs he was playing DE

If we had played a 3-4 and he had those states I would agree with you 100% but down the stretch he started to catch on and there is no question in my mind that he was the most effective player on defense last year.

I like what he did last year for us...and i look for him to have a better year this year. i understand that we did pay him a lot of money but i think he brings to the table things that dont make it on the stat sheets. he brings a nasty attitude, veteran leadership in the locker room and experience to give to our young players. i know he has had some off the field issues but show me a team that doesnt have a player like that.

Joey was all over the feild last year when he started getting healthier. I remember a couple of times when the secondary got smoked Joey was the closest player to the WR and it didn't matter how far behind he was he kept running till the whistle blew. Things like that is what makes Joey the leader (on the feild) and football player he is IMO. I watch all the small stuff an factor that into the equation as well.

Good post. I especially like how you mentinod those things that don't show up on the stat sheet.:up:

You forgot that he led the team in the tackles for losses category. This stat is a great measure if a defensive player is dominant or just good. Here are the top 3 defensive players on the Dolphans last year based upon TLOSS:

* Joey Porter: 7
* JT: 6.5
* Mike Lehan: 4.5

AFC Pro Bowl Roster Top 3

* Jared Allen 9
* Albert Haynesworth: 7.5
* James Harrison: 7

NFC Pro Bowl Roster Top 3

* Pat Williams: 11
* Demarcus Ware: 8.5
* Lofa Tatupu: 7

Highest I Saw:

* E.J. Henderson: 12.5

I think Joey Porter played well. I just think most of you had expectations that were too high.
