Great win yesterday. I was at a sport's bar so I wasn't able to listen to the call but why was Joey Porter penalized for tackling Cassell? It did not appear to be a late hit. Porter also did not make a helmet to helmet hit, or spear Cassell in any way. What gives? Is it time to start putting a dress on the QB's?

Peezy did me proud by backing up his talk!!!! :woot:

It was Vonnie Holliday, and the hit was fine. His helmet was to the side, they said it was for driving him into the ground. They did call Porter, but it was Holliday. If that's the call you're talking about.

yeah vonnie arrived right as the ball released, but you know how the NFL is, trying to protect the patriots any time they can. Even if it is a completely legit hit.

Thanks, my bad....I thought it was Porter, but you're right it was Vonnie Holliday. I don't recall Dick Butkus ever getting flagged for doing the exact same thing, but I guess the NFL doesn't allow defenders to even cough on the QB now-a-days without getting penalized, along with a nice fine later in the week.

it is what they're calling this year.....they have been pretty consistant with it in every game I've watched.

It does drive me crazy but it is what it is. As long as refs are consistant that's all you can hope for.

honestly i could see where the penalty was called. not saying thats the way it should be, QB being babied and all, but vonnie did drive him into the ground

well it's a rule right.....and every body has to play by them. I would have been upset if it wasn't so regularly called.

They also owed the pats one for the Cassel called dead in the 1st. ;)

If you get to see the play again, you will notice that the ball was still touching Cassell's hand when Vonnie first made contact. The ball then leaves his hand and Vonnie's face is up around Cassell's left shoulder, continuing his tackle. The man did what he was paid to do. He tackled the QB with a clean hit. So Cassell landed on his back with Vonnie on top of him. So what? Cry me a river! This IS football. If the rules state that players with the football cannot be hit, then the NFL should just become a chess club. I am sick of sorry a** referees giving teams automatic first downs when they are stopped on third down. If there is a LEGITIMATE penalty, then fine! But this "hometown" officiating has got to stop! There is no way to prove it, but I am convinced that many officials are influenced by the home crowd. I would bet my mortgage that if the week 2 SD/DENVER game was played in SanDiego, Hochhuli would have called Cutler's blunder a fumble.

I will never bet you for your debt!

It was a violent hit, so I could see why they threw the flag initially, but watching it slowed down, it was a clean hit and Cassel still had the ball in his hand at the beginning of the hit. The flag should not have been thrown, and Hill should be on that stat sheet with an INT.

Agreed. Can you imagine how much more of a whooping this game might have been had that INT stood?:lol::lol: :woot:

It was a clean and legal hit. What was wrong with it, and rightfully penalized, was when Vonnie picked him up and drove him into the ground. You cannot do that.

First of all, it was a beautiful tackle. The only problem was the appearance of Vonnie driving his shoulder into Cassel to complete the tackle.

I will bet that Cassel is still feeling that hit. :hi5:
