Last night while surfing channels I saw they were rerunning last years BYU-Utah game with John Beck at QB for BYU. I ended up watching most of the game and I have to say I was REALLY impressed by Beck. He threw for 370+ yard and 4TDs but what was really impressive was his arm strength. The throws he made were just incredible-he really has NFL arm strength-something I had worried he might not have. Utah went up 31-27 with 1:10 to go but in the final drive Beck brought them down the field with pin-point precision and great clock management skills till they were at the Utah 10 with 3 seconds to go. On the final play Beck was under heavy pressure and scrambling out of the pocket towards the top of the screen when he threw back across his body to a receiver on the complete opposite side of the field for the winning touchdown. It was an incredible throw-if you see it you'll feel better about us not drafting Quinn-LOL. CSTV is rerunning the game again on 7/23 at noon and 7/26 at 9pm and I recommend it to all Dolphin fans even if you just watch the last drive of the game you'll be impressed-We got a good QB folks!! :)

Thanks for the heads up. I will be TiVo'ing the game, though I watched the game before already.

Just fast forward through the 2nd and 3rd quarters...not worth watching. The 1st and 4th are great though.

At the Combine, they have quarterbacks through the dreaded out route which is supposed to be a litmus test of whether your QB has an NFL arm.

John Beck's ball velocity, at I believe 61 mph, was the 2nd best at the Combine, behind only Toby Korrodi (small school D1-AA player I believe). Jamarcus Russell did not throw.

What was notable to me about the ball speed was the comparison with a year ago. That was as fast as Jay Cutler could muster the ball and everyone kept raving about Cutler's arm.

Beck was knocked on arm strength because he always threw with touch. He wasn't playing with knockout receivers and he didn't want the ball dropped. His leading receiver was a tight end, so when you throw it to Johnny Harline down the field you've got to loft it high so he can use his size to get it. He knew they wanted to see him throw with touch in college, and now they want to see him throw with zip in the pros.

He's fine in terms of arm strength.

from everything I've heard thus far regarding Beck, it seems as if he is going to be a solid QB for this team.

This is the exact feeling I have every time they question Becks armstrength. Since the guys name was not Quinn or Russell, the media had knocks about them. It just proves to me that they don't do any kind of research or film study to back up their claims.

I saw the drive which put BYu up 14-0. On that drive, Beck rolled to his weak side and was in the process of getting sacked by getting hit on his right shoulder. He was able to still throw the ball accurately over a defenders head where only his reciever can catch it for about 15 yards. Then he closed out the drive with a touch pass over the shoulder of his reciever for a TD.

The key tho this guy is that his highlights show how he would throw to his recievers before they would break on their routes. That demands accuracy, timing and faith in your recievers. Meanwhile he had a different OC every season he played which makes his highlights that much more impressive.

Exactly, I have talked about that play around here many many times, that was very impressive. If you notice, not only does he throw across his body to a receiver on the complete opposite side, but he also does it as he is falling back (no way to plant feet or get any help other then just pure arm strength), while a defensive player is 1-2 steps from getting in front of him and probably blocking the pass.....you can learn a lot about beck with just that play.

that 70 yard pass was right on point but the guy broke it up or else TOUCHDOWN!

What is CSTV?

Basically, he does stack up pretty well, and if the media had actually bothered to do their homework, they would have known all these things about him....

1. -Arm Strength-

As was just shown on top, Beck has an NFL arm w/ plenty of arm strength.

2. -Reading Defenses-

This is a true football geek, he can never have enough info, and has loved to learn...he loves to study so hard, that he may know where the defensive player is going to go, even before he knows.

3. -Quick Release-

This may not be Dan Marino, but as far as this draft class (or the last few draft classes), he has one of the quickest releases. Very little time between seeing that receiver and get rid of the ball...a plus against a top pass-rushing team.

4. -Mobility-

This is far from the fastest QB you will ever see, but thanks to his quick insticts, if he sees nobody open, and there is a running lane, he will take it, and has enough speed to get past the line of scrimmage for positive yardage (Pretty much Montana type speed, might not be fast or agile, but can get 4-10 yards on you if your not careful).

5. -Age-

He will be 26 in August, 3-4 years older then the average Rookie QB, but unlike quality rookie QBs, he has not taken as much punishment as the rest, and considering most quality QBs can play till 36 and beyond, with Becks lack of wear and tear, he should be able to give this team at least 10 years. Also with his age, come more maturity, so he should be ready to start much earlier then the normal Rookie.

6. -Leadership-

Finally if you have watched clips on Beck, you will see that this man is full of leadership skills. He knows what is going on around him at all times, is not afraid to bark orders when need be, and will lead by example, and do whatever it takes to win ( even if it means take a hard shot...Again see that final play in the Utah game).

**This does not mean John Beck is a shoein to succeed in the NFL, all this means is, if he has the heart to succeed that has been written about him countless times this off-season, he is already ahead of the game, and with a little hard work, he will be starting soon....hopefully.**
