I have been hearing a lot about John Beck’s arm, hands, intelligence and accuracy. However, I have not read or heard anything about his footwork. A quarterback’s footwork is crucial not only when he is dropping back in the pocket, but also when he is flushed out and still has to square up to make a dead-on pass. It can mean the difference between a solid ball thrown right to the numbers, or a costly interception going the other way for a touchdown. A quarterback’s ability to square up, lock on to his receiver, and fire the perfect strike starts from the ground up - with his footwork.
I have been watching film on Beck, and it looks impressive enough. Overall, I see that he can run with a normal stride and has the functional hip snap to change directions and avoid pocket pressure. He seems to have decent foot quickness in his pass set (it can be improved though and hopefully, Terry and Cam will work on this). His good throwing mechanics are directly related to that way he sets his feet with agility and solid base. He sets his feet well on delivery, but will show a bit of a wind-up when he releases the ball over the top. He is not Michael Vick, but his feet appear light when he is forced to move out of the pocket.
I like what I see. I think his mechanics and footwork only have to be improved upon. That is where Cam and Terry specialize. Hopefully, they will not do what Martz is doing with Stanton and changing his mechanics (I read this somewhere, here I think: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/teamReport?categoryId=67045&type=InsideSlant ).

true that.. his footwork looks pretty good in the 5 step drop back.. i dont know about the 3 step though... i know of his quick release so hopefully

You want to see some very good footwoork, look at the throw he makes to win the Utah game. He will move to his left in short strides so that he is always ready to throw the ball if the opening presents itself. He then takes off across the field to his right and throws all the way back to his left to his TE who is wide open

I did see that throw. It is quite impressive. I looks a bit funny, but it truly shows how aware he is at all times about the field, other players, his feet, his receivers, the rushers, the timing.
Thanks for the reminder.

I think he's got good footwork, but it can be better.
