will dallas,tx: any news on the supplementary draft tommorow and whose going to pick up brooks?

John Clayton: (4:27 PM ET ) I say Ahmad Brooks goes to SF in the sixth round.

Ryan (MN): Why is Brooks value so low? I would think someone would give up a 3rd or 4th to get a stud MLB?

John Clayton: (4:32 PM ET ) Because of the off-the-field issues, Brooks will go as a bargain. The good thing for the 49ers is that he is working hard and will have a chip on his shoulder.

will dallas,tx: one more jc...6th aint that to high?dont you think he will be gone to the dolphins by then?

John Clayton: (4:34 PM ET ) Early prediction is that the Dolphins wil take a pass and not select him.

I wonder if he's heard anything. When I saw Barry Jackson's note that Saban just recently called Ahmad Brooks on the phone, the first thing that popped into my head was it could have been a courtesy call just to let him know that we would not be picking him in the Supplemental Draft. We've had a lot of exposure to the kid and talked with him a lot, even sent him to Michigan to see Doc Rosen. If we're all the sudden not interested, it wouldn't be out of sorts to give the dude a call and warn him. I'm sure Saban doesn't like that Braylon Edwards had tons of reason to hate us and play like a mad man when we played the Browns in 2005.

Hmmmm.. Now did Saban pay Clayton to say that in order to get brooks in a lower round?

Honestly I think it is foolish to presume that we are not interesested. It would be a huge addition for us and would be equally foolish if we didn't even try to get the guy. The only problem is that we will not be able to get him. There are other teams that pick ahead of us that are interested. I am not saying we should throw away our second rounder or anything, but even if we put a third out there, I personally believe somebody else will have already thrown one out.

I dont understand why we wouldnt offer a 5 at the least

I mean itd be the type of player you would get in the 5th round anways, someone who has the talent but has some off field issues? I just dont see why we wouldnt try that

Obviously we're interested. But when you do your research, sometimes you discover things that make you not interested in anymore. We did an awful lot of homework on Brooks. If we pass on him, you can damn well be sure it's for good reason.

I know everyone will say that Wannstedt would pass on him but actually I think Wannstedt would be the other way, he'd be the only coach to use a 1st rounder on him.

Interesting, I think Brooks has loads of talent, but thats not the whole story with him. Like I said IMO if he last till the 4th we get him, but not before that. I just don't think he will still be there in the 4th. Then again trying to figure out what Saban is thinking by the things he does before a draft is like trying to understand chinese when you were raised in the hills of WV.

maybe saban is trying to lull the other teams into a false sense of security that we won't use a high pick on brooks. also if i was saban and i had no desire to acquire brooks at all i would be showing alot of "interest" in him hoping another team would use a high pick on him which would mean that a player in next years draft just fell one pick closer to our selection. this has the look of a scenario of whichever way we seem interested before the draft we do the opposite. jmo.

I think this is an intregal part of Nick's approach. Every extra penny and draft pick the other 31 teams waste is that much more we aren't competing against... in our cap, picks and on the field.

he is the most complete football coach BB has ever known...

I'm curious about Saban calling Brooks. Wouldn't this be handled by someone else in the organization (GM) -- especially if it's just a curtesy call?

Key word is prediction.

I think everybody said that the Eagles were likely gonna take Wright and we know how that ended up last year.

That's what i was just thinking too. Maybe Saban did call Brooks and did tell him thatwe weren't interested just so that when he tells other people that the fins aren't interested, the other teams drop their price on him. Then Saban comes in at the last second and throws a pick out there and gets him. I probably just made that sound a lot more confusing than it actually is.:goof:

Maybe they should've taken him then they could have Manny battling Shawn Andrews for the fat man award. :D

It doesn't mean that we aren't getting him.

Nobody really knows anything at this point right now.

Nobody knows why Saban called up Brooks, but maybe it was because he told him that we are gonna place a bid down and maybe he told him what to expect from him if we do land him.
