For those living under a rock and don't know who John Denney is, he is our long snapper. Denney is very good at what he does and has played in all 64 games with the Dolphins since he was signed in 2005. That year he had replaced Ed Perry, who was also a solid long snapper and also played some tight end.

Denney has no other position(except for some special teams work) besides being the team's long snapper. Now, I am not banging on his door with a torch and a pitchfork, I just wanted to throw this thought I had out there. I would personally be OK with Denney being on the team as the long snapper as we have learned over time that it is not always an easy position to fill.

I know Jason Taylor is only likely here for one year, but he was the backup long snapper for 9 seasons and was getting work at long snapping at yesterday's OTA. If Taylor could become the full time long snapper and still be an OLB, then we could free up another roster space and potentially keep another WR, lineman or linebacker. If a player who plays an actual position on the offense or defense could step in and perform as the long snapper, wouldn't we be better off going with that over a guy who's only responsibility is to snap the ball on punts, field goals and extra points?

Of course the idea of going with Taylor over Denney does have some major drawbacks. Denney will only 30 years old and probably has a lot more seasons left in him, especially with him only on the field 10 or so times a game. Denney has been consistent and healthy his entire Dolphins career, so replacing him doesn't guarantee improvement in that department.

Again, I am not asking for Denney to be replaced, I am just asking if you would rather see a player at another position also handle long snapping to free up another roster space?

Interesting idea, and I would not be opposed to it if we had a guy that could be SO consistent that it would not be a worry. The last thing we need to worry about is our long snapper hiking shoddy balls.

Another thing to consider is, hypothetically speaking, say Jason Taylor becomes the long snapper. What happens if he gets injured on some random defensive play? Then we would need to scramble to find another one.

I wouldn't mess with Denney at all. I can't remember a bad snap from him, I'm sure there's been some, but none bad enough to remember. He gets the job done. It's not a postion you talk about a lot, but it has the potential to have HUGE impact on games.

One of the outstanding memories I have from last season is watching the Giants come back to beat the Steelers, in large part because their long-snapper got hurt and back-up long snapper James Harrison came in and promptly launced the ball over the punters head for a safety.

I dont agree with you Nub even though the idea is great as far as freeing up a roster spot long snapper is not an easy job imo i sure as hell cant snap a ball in a tight spiralwith accuracy while my butt is up in the air lol anyways I think long snapper is its own creature in the sence that you need to practice it alot in order to be good at it now if Taylor was to become our long snapper how much time will he dedicate to each of his positions? they say practice makes pefect right? splitting him between two postions wont be a good idea another thing is what Atila said if Taylor was to get injured in a defensive play we would have to scramble for another long snapper and I dont think you have many furniture movers taht can snap balls(steelers just in case people dont know) so i think Denney is perfect where he's at

You do not mess with the LS. When you have a guy that is proficient at the job, you do not start tinkering with the position. It is a good thought about opening a roster spot, but the job is a specialization that needs a single player to focus on it. JMHO:D

Didn't he snap one over Fields' head in the Jets game at the end of last season? It was in a close game, I remember....and Sparano was PISSED.

You guys are all making good points. I do want to mention burger13, that Denney did have a horrible snap in the season finale against the Jets in the second half this past year.

It is likely best we don't mess with the position, but I was just thinking today while driving home from work how good it would be if we had a guy who could handle not only the long snapping job, but also be effective at another position. Ed Perry played Tight End for us, though he was not really involved with the offense too much. Maybe the idea of JT as the full time guy is not the way to go, but maybe it is a thought the front office could consider next offseason in free agency or the draft. Maybe a young tight end who also has experience long snapping that could come in and compete with Denney. What about Nalbone?

Yea he botched the one against the jets last year. Scary moment. But that is one of the few times if the only one.

It's always a great idea to free up a roster spot Nubs but with Denney I wouldn't. 1 bad snap in 4 seasons is more than acceptable. Now if he went down then I would definitely use JT or Nalbone (examples only) to free that spot.

exactly what i was thinking... a botched snap in the nfl NEVER happens, still, denney managed to botch one and almost two (fields saved another) in a crucial jets game...

i'm not that thrilled about the guy personally

i might seem a little harsh but those guys are paid like 100 000$ 200 000$ ?? just to snap ? there's a ****load of snappers so don't be too enticed with our LS, especially with the money they make ...

This is why they should have acquired the TE Wurzbacher instead of the other two guys who aren't impressing. Wurzbacher was an excellent LS and ST's guy along with being one of the best receiving TE's in his conference, and he could block.

I didn't say he never had one...just none that I remembered. For that one I was seated at the opposite end of the field and totally hammered!!! :D

If they can beat him out as the long snapper....GREAT! But I don't want to grade on a curve because they contribute in other areas.

John Denny is a DE I believe and Ed Perry was a OK TE before they made him a long snapper then they rarely let him play TE again even though he wanted to.
