John Patterson

what? dude has 10 less wins then carpenter, no way he should be considered.

Carpenter
Clemens
Willis
Pedro
Smoltz
Oswalt

i wouldnt put patterson ahead of any of those guys. Patterson is having a very good year, but there are many people head of him right now to even be considered.

besides, no one should be considered besides Clemens and Carpenter.

his home park is like pitching in the grand canyon!! RFK is huge, his stats are helped by that.

Willis isn't Top 5. Smoltz could make a run at Clemens or Carpenter but he is the only one to possibly break into that top 2.

Very true. If we're counting home parks, Clemens should run away with the Cy Young. Minute Maid Park is VERY hitter-friendly.

Willis isn't top 5 but Smoltz is?

Smoltz GS 26, 12 Wins, 136 K's, 2.89 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 3 CG's

Willis GS 25, 16 Wins, 122 K's, 2.64 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 6 CG's

Willis has been the 3rd best pitcher in the NL all year long. Oswalt is right there also, Pedro has been unlucky or would be higher. Smotlz is right were he should be behind, Carpenter, Clemens, Willis, Oswalt, Pedro, Smotlz.

Willis had a fast start and then hit the crapper now has rebounded a bit.

Smoltz has been consistent all year and went on a big time hot stretch in June, July, and early August.

Smoltz has had a better year.

I live in Atlanta and although Smoltz has been good Dontrelle has been outstanding all year long except for that 4 start stretch in July. Dontrelle has once again been lights out this month, while Smotlz is starting to tire a bit. Dontrelle has 4 more wins on a team with less wins. He isn't leading this race by much but he also leads Smoltz in every major stat except for K's..

Zach Duke of the Pirates is a scary young pitcher (in a good way). I got a chance to see this kid first hand at Shea on Thursday (a birthday present from someone since the Yankees were out of town) and he shut the Mets down. Really made my night since I got to shutdown some Mets fans who were talking trash. Of course I was decked out in my Ricky Williams authentic with a matching Dolphins fitted so you can imagine Jets fans didn't take to kindly to me :)!

He was bad for 3 starts, Mike. They happened to be in a row. He's been unhittable most of the year.

Let me supplement this: my math might be a little off, but without those 3 starts, Willis would be 16-5 with a 1.78 ERA, having allowed only 32 earned runs on the year. If you consider that the crapper, then so be it.

I'm not telling you to disregard those three starts, because they happened, but to use those to discredit the whole season is just wrong. The guy was our only consistent winner until Burnett got hot 4 weeks ago and Beckett came back around the same time.

And did I mention that one of Willis' other losses this year was by a 1-0 final?
