Jon Gruden anchored the ESPN broadcast’s reaction to Jordan’s selection.

He had his doubts.

“I really like Dion Jordan’s athleticism, but I’m shocked about this pick,” Gruden said. “When I watch Dion Jordan play, Mel (Kiper), I just don’t see him play. And this isn’t any false information. When you watch Oregon play, he doesn’t play against Cal because he’s hurt. But they play almost like hockey. He plays six plays; he’s out six plays. When you watch Dion Jordan play seven snaps in an NFL game, that’ll be the first time you’ve ever seen him do it. … He’s a great athlete, but there’s a lot of unknown right now at third overall.”

Even that synopsis sounds rosey to the reality that followed.

I remember leaving the UFC hotel in NJ (I live in Tampa just travel to make extra money selling autographs) and trying to find a sports bar with my buddies and all of a sudden my friend who's a raiders fan looks at me like wth after seeing the trade lol
I remember being like "ya whatever we just got a stud!!" lol Perfect example why the combine is overrated and why I'm not a GM
PHINS UP!!

First, a digression. Here's the way I watch the draft. Just before draft night, I find 4-5 player ranking sites (e.g., Mayock), and print out the 1st 75 ranked players on each site. I only watch 1st two rounds. On draft night, I mark through each name as picked and, when Miami's on the clock, hope for the one of the three highest ranked players at a position of need. End of digression.
I could be wrong, but IIRC, DJ was everyone's top 8 ranked player or higher. Seems a few teams picking top 10 had him targeted. I opposed the pick due to position, but figured, well, if every list in my hand had him ranked high, at least he's no Pat White. Was I wrong or what? Anyway, anyone know if my memory is right? WAS DJ in almost everyone's top 8. Mind you, not top 8 PICK, but top 8 ranked.

He's gone, let it go and shut the **** up about Dion Jordan.

Wow. A former NFL coach could tell he was a lazy POS. Jeff Ireland - total loser.

A 12 year kid told us this. Thanks Jeff. You bald headed moron

Nice analysis by gruden but we all know if Jordan was a qb gruden would have loved him

I hate to admit I liked the pick at the time. A big miss on my part. I saw him as a linebacker, though.

It was interesting in one of Jordan's first interviews he was asked whether he liked a 4-3 or a 3-4 better. He answered a 3-4. I thought that was odd at the time, but also wondered if Miami might be making that switch since that fit him better.

Obviously, there are a lot of misses in the NFL. I'd put Jordan down as a "character" miss. I do think he had talent, but I don't think the desire was there or the work ethic.

I liked the Jordan pick. Its tough as a fan, to know if a player has the intangibles. We don't interview the guy, talk to people who know him, or hear from ex-coaches. As an athlete I still believe Jordan was A+. Where he busted was the effort and smarts. He just didn't have it and if there were red flags, it probably was when you talked to the guy, not his tape. He was barely on the field enough with Miami to judge his play..

Gruden said he would of picked Manziel #1. Nuff said

We need to put an end to this Dion Jordan masochisim. He was an extremely physically gifted player who a lot of teams would have drafted top 3-10. In addition, most of that first round sucked. Time to move on from one bad decision.

I liked him as a SAM up 'till the second he was cut...

Now, I see him going to Denver, or Dallas...passing their physical with flying colors, and playing football.

He will become a Patriot and wreak havoc for next decade
