Most of you know that I dont "put the tape on" very often.
For the most part, when it comes to NFL players, especially Phins, Ive seen them play. I watch every game. I dont need to "put the tape on" to know what happened and have a general idea of why it happened. I saw it the first time. However, I use this footage of Martin I found just to give a concrete example. I didnt watch the whole thing, just the Oregon game and a few plays from the Arizona St game and had to quit. Its basically a waste of time. I already know what Martin is......... HE IS DECENT CORNFED.
Just to get some perspective on this issue, or should I say GET REAL about it, lets go back and examine FACTS about Martin.......
First of all, if you recall, this guy was on many peoples draft boards as a top 10 pick just a couple of months before the draft in 2012. In fact, a lot of the sock puppets on TV had him going to the Phins at #8. As time passed, Martin started to slip and it also became apparent to most that the Phins would take Tannehill at 8. Fast forward to draft day and Martin had slipped all the way to a borderline 1st rounder who the Phins wound up taking early in round 2. I donno about you folks, but most of the time when that happens people consider it a good bargain. I know most of a teams own fans would.
When the season started, Martin at least impressed enough to EARN a starting role on the Phins OL. Lets get real here, teams dont just hand over starting roles to 2nd round picks do they? Of course they dont. When a 2nd rounder starts, he has beaten out everyone he had to in camp. Granted there is an argument there for the level of competition Martin beat to earn the starting RC(right cornfed) role, but we all knew that was the only spot he couldve earned going into last season. No way was a rookie coming in and taking Jake Wrong's spot at LC(left cornfed)......... at least last season!! :d-day:
11 games into the season Jake Wrong goes down with an injury. What do the Phins do? Again they promote Martin instead of anyone else on the roster. Before Wrong got injured, there was talk of Martin taking over the LC position for this season? Would this have been a discussion unless Martin's play warranted it? I dont think so. So Martin got the nod over Garner to play LC when it became available.
Now obviously during the offseason there was talk of the Phins bringing in another player to fill the LC position. No matter how you slice it, it demonstrates some uncertainty from the FO and coaches about Martin playing LC. No one can deny this. However they werent looking into a bunch of mediocre players for the role. They were looking at guys who were considered good LC. This dosent mean they didnt want Martin starting. If Albert had come in or Wrong resigned, indication were that Martin still wouldve started at RC.
Having said all of that, it appears as though while there was certainly some other options explored, when push came to shove the FO and coaches still felt comfortable enough with Martin starting at LC for us. Despite all of this, some want to make the situation out to be much worse than it actually is.
Martin has been nitpicked to death over the last couple of weeks by every amature, wanna be, scout and coach you can find. All it took was a couple of tweets and Martin having a tough time against the best DL in the league in practice and the panic was as widespread as a bunch of hippies at a jam fest. Whether its his technique, (which the wanna be's have no clue about but love having you believe they do), his attitude, his strength, etc etc etc..... Jon Martin is getting knocked around like George Zimmerman. Whats so sad is that its really for no reason. NOBODY, including the coaches, are expecting Martin to be all pro at LC, nor are they trying to feed you the idea that he is. He is simply DECENT CORNFED..........
And if FH hasnt learned anything over the past few years, they shouldve at least learned by now that all you need is DECENT CORNFED. Gonzo has been telling you this ****. Get it through your head.
The last thing this team should be worried about is the OC(offensive corn). When you add it all up, its really a pretty solid OC. Is Martin the best player on OL..... hell no. But, he isnt the worst. So we arent strong at LC. Its ONE SPOT!!!! People still think LC is the most important spot on OC. It isnt. CC(center corn) is. And we happen to have one of the top CCs in the league. When you throw in a solid LIC(left interior corn) and a decent vet FA RC, its not a bad crop. The only real concern is overall depth in the crop. We cant afford injuries on OC.
If you read the Get Real season preview, you know that the defense will be outstanding. Below average play at LC is not going to make or break this team. If the offense is bad, this is still a decent team. If the offense improves, its a playoff team. If this offense plays really well, WATCH OUT!
What is going to really decide whether this offense improves is NOT the LC position. We all know its the QB. If the QB plays well, we will do some great things. The only unit I would worry about on offense is the WR group, whether or not they come together and the depth at the position. Aside from that, its all about how well the QB plays when it comes to how good this offense will be. So ease up on Martin. He is decent cornfed and dosent deserve all of this bs from a bunch of know nothings like Omar.
And for those of you who want to knock Martin's attitude.............. go to the 1:12 mark of that "tape". Martin has your ****ing attitude for you right there. A lot of what I watched on that "film" was nonsense anyway. What they suggest as "positives" and "negatives" just shows their ignorance. Im sure its just a film put together by someone else who swears they are a scout. Some of the plays they put in the "negatives" section I failed to see anything negative about. One of those plays was a screen for christ sakes.
Martin did exactly what he shouldve on that one. A few others were plays where Martin did allow some slight pressure, but it wasnt immediate and of course the QB(Andrew Luck) made a play. Thats what good QBs do. Thats why they are more important than cornfed. One of those plays was a TD pass and they were still knocking Martin.
So Tannehill may have to make some plays. So be it. Whats the problem with that? Dont we want a QB who is capable of moving and making a play? Otherwise lets just go draft cornfed in round 1 every year and bring back Henne the robot statue who completely lacks pocket awareness. See how far that gets you. Be my guest. Parcellsitis I tell you. Get Real. Some of you clowns act like thanks to Martin, Tannehill will be running for his life on every down, and it will cause us to go 0-16. Get Real.
