Fine, ya'll goaded me into it. Let's take a little deeper look at Mr. Jones' performance.
1. Gross average has Donnie ranking 10th among 30 qualifying punters.
2. Net average has Donnie ranking 2nd among 30 qualifying punters.
3. His long of 60 yards puts him at 10th among 30 qualifying punters.
4. None of the punters has been blocked.
5. His number of punts placed inside the 20 ties him with 8 other punters for 11th out of 30.
6. His number of touchbacks ties him with 3 other punters for 17th out of 30 (fewest touchbacks = 1st out of 30).
7. If you add up the punts inside the 20 with the punts that end up touchbacks, you get a percentage of touchbacks during a punt in which you could have placed it inside the 20 yard line. His percentage, 23%, ranks him 18th among 30 (lowest % = 1st of 30).
8. If you add up the punts inside the 10 with punts that end up touchbacks, you get a percentage of touchbacks during a punt in which you could have placed it inside the 10 yard line. His percentage, 60%, ties him with one player for 20th out of 30 (lowest % = 1st of 30).
9. If you add up the punts inside the 20 and the touchbacks, and divide that number into the punts inside the 10, you get a percentage of punts placed inside the 10 that could have been touchbacks or merely between the 10 and 20 yard marks (highest % = 1st of 30). His percentage, 15%, makes him 21st out of 30.
So, his gross average is a little bit above average, his long is a little bit above average, his accuracy inside the 20 is below average. Yet, his net is 2nd highest in the league. Conclusion? Our punt coverage, led by Bryan Gilmore, is pretty darn good, and Jones is probably good at getting hang time (I don't have the stats to back it up). But, his accuracy inside the 20 is less than stellar, and he does not have the ability to consistently boom huge ones just when we need him to (like when we're backed up toward our end zone).
