If anyone wants to know why we have been where we were over recent history it doesn't go as much back to coaching as it does to draft day decisions. Teams are built through the draft. Our history when it comes to the draft speaks otherwise.

Lets look at players who turned out to be viable starters or key players. Lets just start at 1990 which will cover the past 25 years of futility:

1990 (9 total selections)
1 Round 9th pick Richmond Webb T Texas A&M
2 39 Keith Sims G Iowa State

1991 (10)
5 113 Bryan Cox OLB Western Illinois

1992 (15)
1 7 Troy Vincent CB Wisconsin
1 12 Marco Coleman DE Georgia Tech
4 97 Dwight Hollier ILB North Carolina

1993 (7)
1 25 O.J. McDuffie WR Penn State
3 78 Terry Kirby RB Virginia

1994 (7)
1 20 Tim Bowens DT Mississippi
2 65 Tim Ruddy C Notre Dame

1995 (7)
Only Billy Milner made it to the 1996 season. An entire draft that didn't make the team.

1996 (12)
1 20 Daryl Gardener DT Baylor
5 154 Zach Thomas MLB Texas Tech
6 189 Shawn Wooden FS Notre Dame

1997 (14)
2 44 Sam Madison CB Louisville
3 73 Jason Taylor DE Akron
3 92 Derrick Rodgers OLB Arizona State
6 177 Ed Perry TE James Madison (only because of his years as a long snapper)

1998 (10)
2 44 Patrick Surtain DB Southern Mississippi

1999 (8)
2 43 Rob Konrad FB Syracuse
Three picks of the 8 were spend on the backfield which also included J.J. Johnson and Cecil Collins. Yikes.

2000 (6)
5 152 Arturo Freeman SAF South Carolina
Only listed him because he made it 4 years. Everyone else was off the team within 3 years.

2001 (9)
2 52 Chris Chambers WR Wisconsin
3 85 Travis Minor RB Florida State
3 88 Morlon Greenwood OLB Syracuse (borderline)

2002 (5)
3 90 Seth McKinney C Texas A&M
4 114 Randy McMichael TE Georgia
*We didn't have a 1st or 2nd round pick in this year.

2003 (9)
6 213 Yeremiah Bell DB Eastern Kentucky
*Bell was our only viable player from the draft and he was a 6th round pick

2004 (6)
1 19 Vernon Carey T Miami (Fla.)

2005 (6)
1 2 Ronnie Brown RB Auburn
2 46 Matt Roth DE Iowa
3 70 Channing Crowder OLB Florida

2006 (6)
*Jason Allen spent 4 years with the team but he was terrible. A fully wasted draft.

2007 (10)
2 60 Samson Satele C Hawaii
4 108 Paul Soliai DT Utah
7 225 Brandon Fields P
*The Ginn Draft

2008 (9)
1 1 Jake Long T Michigan
2 32 Phillip Merling DE Clemson
2 57 Chad Henne QB Michigan
3 66 Kendall Langford DE Hampton
6 204 Lex Hilliard RB Montana
*Only Jake Long made it past 2011 with this team, and he was gone after 2012.

2009 (9)
1 25 Vontae Davis DB Illinois
2 61 Sean Smith DB Utah
4 108 Brian Hartline WR Ohio State
5 165 Chris Clemons DB Clemson

2010 (8)
1 28 Jared Odrick DE Penn State
2 40 Koa Misi OLB Utah
5 163 Reshad Jones FS Georgia

2011 (6)
1 15 Mike Pouncey C Florida
6 174 Charles Clay RB Tulsa

2012 (9)
1 8 Ryan Tannehill QB Texas A&M
3 72 Olivier Vernon DE Miami (Fla.)
4 97 Lamar Miller RB Miami (Fla.)

2013 (9)
4 104 Jelani Jenkins LB Florida
*Jury is still out on Jamar Taylor but it isn't looking real good at this point.

2014 (8)
1 19 Ja'Wuan James T Tennessee
2 63 Jarvis Landry WR LSU

2015 (7)
*DeVante Parker looks to be the real deal. Jordan Phillips has potential while Bobby McCain & Jay Ajayi have shown flashes. Jury still out on this class.

221 TOTAL PLAYERS SELECTED OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS. Of those only about 48-55 of them really panned out with a few still to be determined. Of those 48-55 only about 34-37 of them have been true impact players. In 25 years, 221 draft picks and at most 37 of them have been impact players who were with the team for 4+ years (or trending that way). That is roughly 17% of our draft picks panning out for impactful careers with the team. There were a few drafts where we totally missed and even had one where the entire draft was gone by the end of the next season.

The ultimate failures of this team over a HUGE expanded period of time are directly traced back to the draft, which also includes picks lost due to bad trades, and our inability to correctly identify talent & get the most out of them.

Chris Grier was the Director of College Scouting from 2007 and on.

I wonder how this compares to..say...the Pats? Would be interesting to see the diff against a winning franchise.

Pats are a bad example. Not very good at the draft either.

Try the Packers. A team that doesn't trade for players or play in the free agent market.

This is a key point and thank you for posting that. You have to wonder if anyone in the front office is really taking the time to analyze past drafts to see just where the faults are with this team.

btw...hit neg rep by accident. Will make it up to you. Sorry.

I'd still love to see comparisons to other teams. I bet a few draft well but many are with us which solidifies the point as to how overrated the draft is, especially anything after round 2, even though we're always clamoring to trade our players for more picks.

How did

Desmond Howard
Reggie White
Keith Jackson
Charles Woodson
Julius Peppers
Brett Favre

end up in Green Bay?

Its hard to pass too much judgement when there is such a high rate of turnover in the coaching staff/philosophy from one season to the next. Guys like Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas may have been out of the league in a couple seasons if they had a different coach. But in the right environment they became hall of famers. Jason Allen may have developed into something special under Saban, Ginn under Cameron, etc...

Let's see Brett Favre was in 1992...Julius Peppers 2013 or so...so you've named 6 players that span 21 years. You got me. Packers definitely are players in trades and free agency.

There's no disputing the Packers draft success. It's stellar. Ted Thompson has drafted 104 players since 2005, more than any team and the Packers lead the NFL with 1,860 starts and 3,267 games played from drafted players. They have 119 more starts and 106 more games played by drafted players than any NFL team. The only knock Thompson might get is that he has always had the benefit of drafting for a team with an excellent franchise QB at the helm . . . one of which he drafted.

We could use a sure fire HOF caliber player this year ~ even a blind squirrel finds a nut ~ this is my hope anyway....

I have lowered my expectation tremendously for this franchise ~ there is simply no reason to be so invested so much at this time

Charley Casserly was talking about this subject on Sirius yesterday. He studied drafts and said only 30% make it as starters after 4 years. So it looks like we are way below the norm in our picking successful staters in the draft. Good work compiling and posting.
