ALOT of people here wanted us to draft him when he came out (myself included) maybe now we get him.

The Dolphins are "ready to make a strong push" for free agent OG Justin Smiley, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

There was some speculation the Fins would pursue Alan Faneca, but they're much more likely to entertain younger, less costly free agents. Smiley could reportedly also draw attention from the Rams, Bengals, and Raiders.

I remember Smiley from the draft, but I don't remember hearing about his play on the Niners. Does anyone know how this guy grades out currently?

He missed eight games last season with a torn labrum so hopefully, that's not an issue. Prior to that, he hadn't missed a game in his career and had started over 40 games in a row.

He is noted for his toughness, which obviously isn't lost on Parcells/Ireland/Sparano.

Once you get past Faneca I don't think there's much difference between the next group of guards (Jacob Bell, Hadnot, Smiley) so I'd be on board with this signing. Plus, he's only 26 which is the kind of free agents we should be going after.

Bring on Smiley, re-sign Rex and draft a LT and we'd have the makings of a pretty solid line.

i agree smiley is the type of player i would want in the trenches he is tough, i remember him in the draft and was disappointed when we passed on him

hopefully we land him and like finforlife says we could have a pretty good oline next season

i didn't even know he was a UFA... I'd love to bring him in, the 9ers run game was a lot more effective when he was playing.

I think the key point here is Smiley's ability to pull. That is really key in Hennings offense and besides Faneca he is arguably the best

Justin Smiley is a great young offensive guard for the 49ers, I think he has really learned a lot playing with Larry Allen. He is big and strong, the perfect guard for the Dolphins. Also he is coming off of an injury season so he should come for a whole lot cheaper than Alan Faneca. I believe that he is 26 years old.

He wants $10 million guaranteed and $30+ million in total.

He'd be an excellent pick up as he's hugely strong, especially in his base, he's a fine technician, he's a leader and as Disgust says, he fits perfectly into the system because he pulls and traps so well.

well, we actually need both a LG "and" a RG, as well as a LT and two backup OTs and a backup OG...so maybe we are looking to sign more than just Smiley via FA.
