Haven't heard much of him as far as performance, but he is in his 4th year and he started 41 of 48 games for the 49's, including 32 straight iin the 05-06 seasons. The niners are listening at trade offers. He was a 2nd round pick and they probably want that in return, but we would know he can start in the NFL as opposed to a rookie, who may or may not become starting material. Any thoughts?

Might be a sign that they've been unsuccessful in contract negotiations.

He's entering the final season of his rookie deal. They'd approached him early last season about an extension.

Smiley would be a nice grab for us as long as we can ink him to a 4-5 yr deal.

Not sure what it would take to get him.

Cause he's good enough and smart enough and gosh darn it....people like him!

Oooops sorry, that's Stewart!

Smiley's a pretty good guard but I wouldn't fork over draft picks for him. He did play a pretty sizable role in helping Gore run wild though.

i dont see why not. hes a good lineman. id give up a 4th rounder for him. if we gave up any higher, the 49ers better ship us someone else too.

Why would they accept a 4th when they spent a 2nd on him, regardless of the extension (you can counter that with saying a 2nd won't pan out for sure)?

He'd have been here already if Rick Spielman had followed my draft advice that year.

I referred to Smiley in my Kwame Harris thread.

Smiley would require a 2nd round pick IMO and would be worth it because he is near a Pro Bowl caliber guard. Only probelm is that he is expecting a pretty big contract and I'm not sure the Dolphins would be willing to show him the money considering the draft pick they would have to give up.

But f we did get him he would definitely upgrade the O-line.

If we are convinced he's better than any other guard available in the second then yeah, give them a 2nd. I like Smiley a lot.
